Though it's rare, I am certain I have oral HSV2. A couple years back I was with my then-boyfriend (now ex) when I noticed he had a weird spot on his lip (not having had cold sores before, I had no idea what it wa). When I asked him about it he dismissed it and so we continued on. A few days later, I got a weird thing on my lip that eventually turned into a ton of cold sores, along with aches/nausea/fever- signs of that first infection by the HSV virus. I didn't know what it was, went to the doctor, and they clearly knew it was cold sores, and took some swabs of the sores to test for the type. It came back has HSV2.
Recently I've been doing a lot more to educate myself because one of my friends just contracted genital HSV1 and I'm in a new relationship so I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to protect my boyfriend. I read something that made it sound like if you have oral HSV2, you almost definitely have genital HSV2- so this freaked me out a bit. I've never had ANY symptoms of genital herpes, but do have occassional cold sores. Does anyone know what the real answer is?
