Need help interpreting ELISA (positive) results + Bells Palsy ?

So I just got my HSV 1& 2 blood test back using the ELISA test.. both came back positive HSV 1 - 2.065
& HSV 2 - 3.825 ...

I have never had symptoms and this was a routine test.  The med asst tells me there isn't much recourse unless I have an outbreak then I should come in an get a culture.  My ?'s are:

- What do the High numbers means?  Do they correlate to length of antibody in my system?
- Should I get another Blood test? Western Blot?
- In both 06 and 07 I came down with a bout of Bells Palsy around the same time each year.  The 1st year there was no blood test done and they assumed it was stress and the 2 time the first doc said it was again stress but a 2nd opinion said it may be Lyme and prescribed omoxycilin accordingly.  Could HSV be the culprit?
- If i've never had/noticed and outbreak should I start repressive therapy/medication?

It would be totally up to the two of you what precautions you take. You can even decide just to avoid sex any time you feel anything going on genitally too if you want. once you know who has what it's something to discuss together.

thanks again

Lastly,

If it does come back months from now that I am HSV2+ and my partner isn't.. although I have never had an "obvious" outbreak what should be my recourse? suppresive therapy?

Don't actually have a provider.  It was a walk in clinic paid 300 bucks for all the testing.  I knew something was off when I asked "well what if I've already had an outbreak and not known" he responded "you WOULD know, there would be something visible or you'd feel something wrong"

So the plan is tell the gf (not good).. make sure she gets tested then depending on her results act accordingly?

sounds like your provider isn't anywhere near up to date on herpes info or herpes testing :(

Yes thanks..

I finally spoke with the doctor yesterday and he seems to be pretty non-chalant about it.  He basically said unless there is an outbreak there is no real need to worry.  He basically said do nothing until then.  Which seems crazy to me.  He even said I don't need to tell the "live in gf".  If there aren't any physical signs and since the numbers are low don't worry

this advice doesn't sounds right..

your live in gf will also need tested to know her status. if she's hsv2 negative then you could get the biokit in 2 weeks. if she's also hsv2+, you'll need to wait before getting the biokit done. The biokit isn't accurate until 4 months post encounter hence my recommendations to wait. if your gf is negative for hsv2 then you know there's no risk of this being a newly acquired infection for you so confirming your status sooner is ok. make sense?

yes it is likely you've had hsv1 prior to this past month.

Sorry about the reposts Grace.. I was just pretty much freaking out because there wasn't anyone to talk to.  The doctor nor medical asst had anything meaningful to say so I was just trying to find out info.

I've had unprotected sex prior to that month with a live in gf.  I found a DR that administers the biokit apparently there are 2 in the city.  When I called he advised I wait 2 weeks before testing.  the HSV2 iGg was done on monday.

I guess my last question is.. since I had the bell's outbreaks years ago and have had pretty much the same sex partner for 3+ years (except past month) can I assume that I may have been exposed to virus prior to this past month?  and if that is the case should I go get the test earlier than 3 months from now.

please read our read before posting post on the forum. we are all volunteers and not having received a reply in 3 hours certainly isn't the least bit unusual!

your hsv2 igg is still a low positive result and will need further confirmatory testing since you haven't had any genital symptoms that you can recall.  since you just had sex a month ago, you need to wait another 3 months and then follow up with either a biokit or herpes WB. I know other folks have gotten the biokit in nyc pretty easily. Several providers in NYC are familiar with the herpes Wb too. search around so that when it's time to test, you know your options.

bells palsy is frequently caused by hsv1 orally. certainly should you be unlucky enough to get a 3rd attack of it, your provider should assume it's hsv1 related and treat you accordingly.

Grace please help..  I have scoured the forum so I know that the BioKit and/or WB test is the next logical step.  I am still confused about when I should take that test and the other questions above regarding Bell's and the last ?

additionally I have had unprotected sex within the last month.  Am I to assume that if the ELISA test is indeed positive for hsv2 that it occurred prior to last month?
