Planning for future children

I am 33 year old woman and have just been diagnosed.  I am still working with my doctor to determine the best treatments for me.  We haven't talked about the possibility of having children and how or if that is possible now after my diagnosis.  I have not been nor am I now actively trying to conceive.  However, I am wondering if anyone on here has been on suppressive therapy to reduce the risk of infecting their uninfected partner and conceived successfully?  Ultimately, I would assume that your partner has to accept and be ok with the potential to be infected (provided they aren't already) in order to attempt to conceive.

your herpes isn't a big issue at all when you are ready to start a family!!!

do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally? what testing was done?

so what do you do when you have found a partner you want to start a family with? well if they also have the same type of herpes that you do, have sex just like anyone else!  If they are negative and you have hsv2, you can consider daily suppressive therapy to help lower your partner's risk of contracting hsv2 from you while you are having unprotected sex.  A male partner is 98% likely each year NOT to contract hsv2 from you if you are avoiding sex anytime anything is going on genitally and you are on suppressive therapy.  really low odds :)

when you become pregnant, you and your provider can discuss whether you want to start suppressive therapy in the pregnancy doses for the last month of pregnancy to help reduce the risk of having an obvious hsv2 recurrence so that you have better odds of delivering vaginally .

Thanks for your thoughts, Grace.  I have HSV2.  Like I said in my post I am not trying to conceive right now but it is a real possibility in the future.  I have also already had conversations with my doctor about pregnancy in the future.  He has guided several HSV2 women through pregnancies and deliveries successfully.  So, I feel good about that.  I am not going on suppressive therapy right now but we will visit that when/if I come to a point where I want to have a baby.  Again, thanks for sharing openly!

You can always have a c section.  If I were a woman, I would go this route.  I will make sure my kid did not have any risk what so ever.  That is just me.

You're thinking is very good and exactly the way it will happen. 1 in 10 babies born today are to mothers with genital HSV2, the vast majority with no issues whatsoever. Your doctor will guide you safely through your future pregnancy.
