Positive IgM, fixing to take specific IgG...

I'm new to this forum, so hopefully I will not break any rules or such.  If so, I sincerely apologize!  First off, I'm a college male that has recently learned the dangers of risky sexual behavior, so my actions up to this point have not been flattering to me personally; I just obviously have issues turning down sex and making the correction decision in the heat of the moment.

Basically, up until Oct. 1, 2010, I had no reason to think I could have an STD (always practiced safe sex).  Anyway, on Oct. 1, I had unprotected oral sex and gave unprotected oral sex to a girl.  No symptoms, so I just waited to get a full STD test done after 28 days.  After 28 days, I wasn't concerned, so I didn't have a test done at all.  Anyway, on Nov. 11, I had unprotected vaginal sex with another girl once.  I instantly regretted it.  However, no symptoms again, but I did get a STD test, except no HSV as it was not offered.  I tested negative for everything.  Then on Dec. 14th I had unprotected oral sex and condom-protected sex.  I didn't have any symptoms aside from a small, non-inflamed cut from the oral sex, or so I hope that's what it was.  It is gone now.  After this, I read some material on the subject and had an IgM test (now know this was a waste).  Anyway, I tested out at 1.51 with >1.09 being "positive."   I'm scheduled to take the HSV Types 1 and 2 Specific Antibodies, IgG test from Labcorp today.

My questions are the following:

1. If I test positive on the IgG test for HSV 2, does that mean I for sure have HSV 2?
2. If so, what do I do?
3. If I test negative for HSV 2 on the IgG, does that mean I for sure don't have HSV 2?
4. If so, should I get tested again to make sure?

the test your provider ordered first does a non-type specific herpes test. if it's negative, they don't do any further testing. if it's positive then they only look for hsv2. it isn't as accurate as the type specific tests are as well as it just assumes if you are + on the non-type specific, that you must have hsv1 which is also an erroneous assumption.

I thought it said type specific in the language.  Is this not correct?

you had the non-type specific test done but it was negative. it's not as good as the type specific tests are but since you have to repeat your test again anyways since it was too soon, not really an issue.

let us know what your repeat test results are and make sure that your provider orders the proper testing when you retest. the test they ordered was not the best one to be ordering for their patients. 164905  or 138487  would both be far better choices for your provider to be ordering. it's important to know your hsv1 status as well as your hsv2 status and the test your provider ordered doesn't do that.

I received my test results back today. I tested at "<.9" with the following parameters on the HSV I/II IgG Rflx I-II Type Specific test:

less than .9 equals "negative"
.9 - 1.0 equals equivocal
greater than 1.0 equals "positive"

I still should get the test again in two months given these results, correct?  Thanks so much!

herpes is not a part of routine std testing. odds are none of your partners have ever been tested for it to know their status.

you can get it from a one time oral sex encounter though of course the odds are low.

I'm so nervous.  I don't have any symptoms whatsoever.  The first two girls I'm sure didn't give me anything, almost positive as I could trust their word more.  The last I'm not so sure.  How likely is it to get herpes from ONE oral sex experience when she had no signs whatsoever?

if they are positive then you know you have herpes but if they are negative, too early to consider them your final answer.

Thank you for your answer, grace!  I wasn't able to read your response until after I went today to get the test, though.

Will the results mean anything now?  We're past three months from the first encounter.  Around the 2 month mark for the second, and right at the 1 month mark for the last.

Thanks so much!

You have to wait at least 3 months after the last time you had sex to get your herpes blood testing done. if you can, reschedule your appointment from today until March or april for more accurate results.

You can get tested for chlamdyia and gonorrhea anytime after 3 months post encounter. syphilis after 6 weeks. herpes and hiv after 3 months.  Just some general information for you for future encounters.  Protect yourself by only having protected sex and protected oral sex with partners if you aren't aware of their std test results and trust that they are truthful about it.

let us know how your test results turn out once you've gotten them back!
