Positive but negative ?

Over a year ago I had my first out break.
I had a swab test come back for hvs1.
Well about 8months later I had a negative western blot  for hvs1&2.
I don't understand ,

By the way, Fleetwood20 is incorrect in stating a Western Blot does not state "negative." I have taken the test personally through Westover Heights and the Quest result sheet provided does say "negative" via Western Blot.

I don't want others to question if they had the WB (they should know very easily) just because of an incorrect statement.

"the routine test actually misses 25% of HSV 1 infections, sadly"
This is what Teri told someone about igg test ,
I've always read 10% what's your input on this ?

"And of course  the more you take the test the less it will be affected but inaccurate results."
What do you mean by this

HSV1 is tricky. The 10% rule from what I gather only applied to standard IGG testing and NOT the WB. However, now Grace and Life differ from Fleet in this regard as it relates to WB accuracy. The U of W states the WB is 99% accurate. I don't believe this to be the case because of situations like this.

If standard IGG can miss HSV1 infections 1/10 times then what's the purpose of the WB if the same thing applies to their testing method as well? It's conflicting information like this that is so frustrating.. I thought the WB could be used to clear up those that feel they fall in this category. Clearly, that's not the case based on what I just read above as you can fall in that 10% category with the WB as well.

My opinion? Swab trumps any IGG testing. There's a reason those small sample size of people infected with herpes can test negative for life via IGG and WB, yet be known positive due to a PCR swab.

Always trust a positive swab or any blood test. If like me you experience ongoing symptoms but have repeated negative tests, your only shot is PCR swabbing at home. There's no explanation for it, just some people can test negative for life via blood serology, yet can confirm their status if skeptical of their blood results by swabbing all lesions. Sucks, but nobody has an explanation for it.

A positive swab over turns the blood test. Also having a positive swab and a negative blood test indicates a recent infection. And of course  the more you take the test the less it will be affected but inaccurate results.

That's what I'm asking if I test again will the 10% false negative decrease or will it remain the same ? I've also read that most of the time that if you have a positive swab and a negative igg or western blot test that the test will remain negative . Is that correct ?

This is just hair spliting to mention all these percentags so close to eachother. If you think your test was not accurate then test again.

So is it 99% , 95% or 90% I've read so many conflicting statements ?

I thought that the WB had a demonstrated specificity for both HSV1 and HSV2 in excess of 99%.

Is there now some evidence that for HSV1 it is less than this?

So if you take more then one test does that 10% decrease ?

Hi, 10% is pretty low odds that someone would fall into the percent but 90% are accurate which is for sure something we can be confident about. Those that might opt for a second test would be those that have symptoms or had an exposure but for the average person just courious, one test would be sufficient.

I read things like this post and honestly how is anyone suppose to believe that just because  their igg and wb test were negative that they are truly negative ? Unless you chase a swab test with most people don't have money /time to jump up and go to the doctors every time they feel the littlest thing .

About 10% of folks will test falsely negative on the herpes WB blood test. No blood test is perfect. Hsv1 is much harder to detect than hsv2 is on testing too for some reason.

You had a + lesion culture. we recommend you go with that over the WB results.

If you were a phone patient, was that a patient of the westover heights clinic?

I'm still questioning the WB result, who did it for you? The result comes back as Not Detected and not negative.

In some circumstances a swab can be contaminated, usually this involves a PCR test on the swab, was this the test applied to the swab?

Also what were the circumstances leading up to the swab? Most likely you need to have had some vigorous oral sex and four days later an outbreak of sores... is this what happened?

Yes it was the westernblot ,
I was a phone patience and they didn't tell me numbers just said it was negative for type one and two ,
Is it possible my swab was wrong ?

Are you sure it was a Westrnblot? How were the results expressed?
