No reason why you can't conceive naturally just because of herpes. There is no research that shows that it has any effect on a woman's fertility.

Only testing can tell the difference between hsv1 and hsv2 genitally.

Check out the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com.

Hi,

Sorry its taken me a while to reply!.

ok I'm not actually sure it was hsv2??? how do you actually tell the difference??? *confused*

I'm not worried about the giving birth side of things,I've researched enough to know where I stand.

Ever since I got together with my husband we have practised safe sex, my husband knew from the beginning that I had herpes, so we were as careful as we can be!.

I just need to know if we can concieve naturally, where i stand and how to go about things???

ur advice is brill, I just want to be 100% sure of what i need to do!

thanx x x x x x

Feel free to ask more specific questions if we are not getting what you are asking :)

first of all - are you sure you have hsv2 or was it just assumed it was hsv2 because it was genital? Also has your husband ever been tested for herpes? Even if he was negative a few years ago - he can get retested now to see what his status is if most of your questions revolve around keeping him hsv2 negative if indeed he still is at this point ( and if that's what you have ).  If you two do nothing but avoid sex whenever you have symptoms - he's about 96% likely each year not to contract hsv2 from you.  Some couples decide to still use condoms if that is their usual precaution - you can cut a hole in the tip to let sperm out if that's what you want to do. If you are usually on daily suppressive therapy you can stay on it until you confirm your pregnancy and then you should stop it and switch to episodic therapy until the last month of pregnancy.  With today's home pregnancy tests - you can detect your pregnancy before you are sharing a blood supply with the baby so that there's no risk of the medication even getting to baby.

Otherwise as ataglance jokingly put it - have sex and have fun :)  There is no risk to the baby until it's time for delivery.  When you get close to that point - come back and we'll help you with that part too if you need it :)

Also if you are thinking of becoming pregnant - start a pre-natal vitamin now so that you have plenty of folic acid before you conceive. You can buy otc pre-natal vitamins in many stores.  It also never hurts to build up your iron and calcium stores beforehand and the pre-natals have plenty of both in them :)

Try the missionary position.  Just kidding.  Try any position you want.  Why would you think that having herpes keeps you from getting pregnant naturally?  You do have to have unprotected sex but that's kind of fun.   If you have an OB at the time you are ready to give birth, they will do a c-section.  I know lots of women with herpes who have had vaginal births and delivered happy, healthy, beautiful babies.  They got pregnant the old fashioned way too.  You child will not be born with herpes either.   A baby is very well protected in the mother's body.  Nature does this to keep our species alive.

Women with herpes are getting pregnant everyday with no more problems than a woman who doesn't have hsv2.  Herpes is a benign skin disease, nothing more.  It's even been found to offer protection against certain cancers.

The biggest issue with pregnancy seems to be age but at 27, that's not a problem for you.  I have friends in their 40's getting pregnant and they are at risk for many more problems due to health issues like high blood pressure.

If you are healthy, young and the only issue is having herpes, having a baby will be a breeze.  Congratulations to you both on becoming parents one day.
