Recently Positive for HSV 1/2

Hi,

I have recently (4 weeks ago) had a positive HSV 1/2 diagnosis via an IgG exam.  I don't have the numeric value of the result, but it was above a 4.0.  I've had occasional redness of the penis glans and small painless blisters on the inner cheek, closer to the front of my mouth.

I am a 35 year old male and have been married for 8 years and my wife and I have a 5 year old daughter.  My wife has never been tested and she doesn't think that she has ever had any type of herpetic outbreak.  She is fully aware of my positive results.  We would really like to start trying to have another child, but don't know how we should proceed.  Should I get on medication?  Are there precautions that we need to be aware of?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

If she's positive, you can definitely have another child.  She just needs to make her OB aware of her situation, and proper precautions will be taken.

Thank you...I believe my results were greater than a 4, but I am out of the country with my family for another week and a half.  I'm sure that I'll be able to post results then.

The reason that I got tested was because of a single massage parlor enounter  a year ago that led me to feel the need for a full panel  STD test.

You mentioned that if my wife is negative than we can try to have another child.  What if she is positive?

Thanks.

Great question.  She needs to be tested, for sure.  If she is HSV 2 and/or HSV 1 negative and you are positive, then you can certainly have another child, but great care must be taken during the 3rd trimester to prevent transmission to your wife (and possibly your child).  May I ask why you got tested for herpes at all?
Were the values for both HSV 1 and HSV 2 greater than 4?  Or are you describing a combination test?  Could you get your results and possibly post them here so we can be certain that you had the correct testing done?
