Confused

My husband of 5 years and I both just took a herpes test mine came back positive his came back negative, how is this possible?  I have never to my knowledge had and outbreak and was shocked to see I had it.  If I was infected prior the marriage (I haven’t been unfaithful) how has he not contracted the disease in the past 5 years.

he had sex with you for years while you were infected and he never contracted it. why is he worried now?

are you two seeing a marriage counselor? this isn't something that most couples successfully work through on their own :(

he'll need to repeat most of his testing at the appropriate times.

Ugh no way its not selfish to be hurt by that! I would be. Should be doing anything and everything to try to be with you in my opinion!

It was a 6 month affair that ended in October so it was about 6 weeks on all testing.

I decided after I found out about the infidelity I would stay and try to work it out.  Once he found out I was positive he decided he didn't want to have sex with me with out taking precautions because our marriage may not work and he doesn't want to get infected.  Is it selfish of me to be hurt by this?

aaahhh :(

did he wait at least 3 months after he had last had sex for his herpes, hiv and hepatitis testing? it's also 6 weeks after the encounter for syphilis testing too.   we don't test for hpv but if you use condoms properly ( condom goes on when the clothing comes off ), it reduces transmission of hpv by 90%.

Thank you for the response.  The ironic thing we got tested because he stepped outside the marriage.  :-(

thank you for getting those results for me :)  Yes indeed you did have the proper testing done and your results are over the typical false positive range so odds are it is accurate .

since you are testing + and hubby isn't, you've had this prior to him and never knew it. it's actually far more common than most folks think it is. Over 90% of folks who have hsv2, have no idea they have it until tested and it sounds like you fall into this category.

so what do you do now?  well if you did nothing but avoid sex anytime you have anything going on genitally, he is 96% likely each year NOT to contract hsv2 from you. You already know from your years you've been together that the risk of transmission is overall low :)  If you decide to take daily suppressive therapy, you cut his risk in half and he'd be 98% likely each year not to contract hsv2 from you.

was there a particular reason why you both got tested?

keep asking questions!!

can you please get your exact test results to post here for me - e.g. hsv1 igg 4.3 and hsv2 igg 2.9 or whatever they are? That way I can be sure you were properly tested and see if you need additional confirmatory testing - thanks!!

just call the clinic and ask them to read them to you if you don't have them at home.

Female to male transmission rates seem to be lower than male to female transmission rates. You just never gave him the virus in the past 5 years, that is all.
