I have hsv-1 orally. About two weeks ago my boyfriend got one painless blister on the shaft of his penis. It didn't itch or hurt at all. He noticed it on Thursday, and manually popped it. Friday after getting a tattoo, he got a fever and sore throat which lasted several days. The flu like symptoms were definitely more severe than the blister on his penis. I did not have any sores at the time. I know it's possible to have asymptomatic shedding, but it's unclear as to how often the virus is passed orally to genitally during asymptomtic shedding time. Much of what I read about cold sore suggests just to avoid contact during outbreaks. He got tested the following Monday with a blood test and it came back negative. Our concern is he tested too early and got a false negative. In the meantime while we wait for the next test, I'm interested in hearing other people's thoughts on if this sounds probable for genital hsv-1.
