Confused

I went to the doctors for an STD test and it came back positive for genital HSV-1. Does that mean that my partner has HSV-1 as well? He has never had any symptoms, atleast what he can remember, but I know he gave it to me because I was a virgin before I met him. Once my sores on my genitals heal, can we still have oral sex or will I transmit the disease to him? If he has HSV-1 and I as well, do we still need to use protection when having sex? I'm so confused and cannot find information that is consistent on every website. Thank you for all your help.

The swab was typed for hsv1, correct?

If your bf was your only sexual partner, then yes, he gave it to you. It does not take a visible cold sore (doesn't your bf get cold sores?) or visible genital symptoms to transmit herpes - we shed the virus even when there are no lesions.
Assuming he gave it to you, you two don't need to take any additional measure to avoid transmission. That's because he won't catch something that he already has. Of course we also suggest avoiding sexual contact when there's a outbreak, just to err on the side of caution.
