Recurrent HSV-1 breakouts

Hello. My boyfriend and I were diagnosed with genital HSV-1 herpes a little over a year ago. We are unsure of how it was passed between us, because neither of us had had any breakouts in the past and our past partners had gotten tested. I have not had any breakouts, but he has. The initial breakout was pretty severe. After the first, he would get a breakout about once a month to once every two months, progressively less frequently, depending on the stress levels - but never as bad as the first. However, I have been living in a different city for the past month and a half or so, and we have only been seeing each other about once every two weeks, and we had sex every time. He has been getting a breakout after every time that I've left, and last week it was really bad. I returned to see him this past weekend, and immediately after we had sex, it seemed that the outbreak was coming back. Do you know if there's any reason why the outbreaks - after a year - are becoming more frequent, seemingly catalyzed by sex? I am thinking that it's perhaps of the lack of constant exposure or higher levels of stress due to my going away. Any ideas? I would really appreciate any answers because I don't really understand what's happening.

It could be a dermatological condition of some sort, a fungal infection, an allergic reaction or many other things.  He'll need a further work up to figure out what is going on.

Do you have any idea what it could if not a reoccurring herpes outbreak?

I doubt what your bf is thinking is all related to herpes is. Genital herpes rarely reoccurs this often and the odds of hsv1 genitally reoccuring this often is incredibly low.  He needs to see his doctor or a dermatologist for further evaluation to figure out what is going on.

Have him visit a doctor so he can put him on medication.
