Very Puzzling

My fiancee is herpes free and has been recently tested.  My father developed shingles last month and I was tending to him and had direct contact with the sores before we knew what it was.  I had my first outbreak of herpes last week and it was BAD.  Here's the kicker, the last time I had sex with anyone other than my fiancee (who i've been with for 2 years) was over 12 years ago.  Is it possible for the virus to lay dormant for this long or what the hell is going on?

I have herpes 2 and she got tested the second I broke out.  I only mentioned the shingles as it is herpes zoster and apparently in the same family and I thought it might have triggered the outbreak not caused it.  I went to the doctor and the swabbed the sores on my private area to get the diagnosis.

Shingles is the chicken pox reactivating ( herpes zoster ). It absolutely can not cause anyone to have herpes simplex - they aren't the same virus.

How were you diagnosed as having herpes? Do you have it orally or genitally? Do you have hsv1 or hsv2?  Has your fiancee been tested for herpes or just assuming a lack of symptoms means a lack of infection?

And yes it is possible to be infected with herpes that long and not notice an ob until 12 years later.
