Viral Meningitis

Hi there............My daughter has been in the hospital with serious viral meningitis for the last 6 days and will be there for another 6.  They have determined that the herpes virus is responsible for the meningitis.

Question:  Can the herpes simplex cause the viral meningitis even if she does not have the genital herpes?  She was tested negative for the virus a couple months ago.

She was quite sick and had to be given morphine, anit-viral and steroids.

This sounds very atypical for herpetic meningitis, at least based on all of the research I've ever done. Everything I've ever read suggests this is one of the forms of benign meningitis and usually doesn't cause severe enough symptoms to be debilitating, nor does it usual cause permanent damage. In worst case scenarios I've heard of people getting on aciclovir, but not all of the stuff you mentioned. Did they do a lumbar puncture and confirm it's in fact meningitis and that HPV is the only possible cause?

How old is your daughter?

Did they type the herpes meningitis as hsv1 or hsv2?
