Western Blot Worthwhile?

by hsv1questions, Dec 05, 2008 10:49PM
I had an IGG test about 4 years ago and then another one a few months ago that showed positive for HSV1. Both times the numbers were in the area of 1.10, and I have not have definitive symptoms.

Is a western blot worthwhile in establishing whether this is a false positive? And, if so, could you give recommendations for where or how to get the test. If it matters, I am in the NYC area.

Thanks In Advance.

Only 1 lab in the US does it but any doctor can order it up for you if you really feel it's worthwhile for you.

Most adults have hsv1 orally.  It's incredibly common and to be honest it's probably not worthwhile to follow up on this with the WB.  Even the WB still misses 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections so you might not get the definitive results you are looking for :(

The thing is I might have HSV1 genitally - one doctor said it was, another doctor said absolutely not. Based on my own observations I feel like it wasn't since there were never any blisters - but the whole issue is very confusing.

Anyway, you're saying that the western blot will give false negatives 10% of the time for HSV1?
