acyclovir for cold sore

I've been getting cold sores for as long as I can remember. I have never been tested for HSV 1 but always assumed that's what it is. I used to only get 1 or 2 every year or two. But, recently they have been more and more frequent. I used the 200mg acyclovir at times when I felt I was getting an OB and it worked very well. Although, there have been times, once or twice, when it did not work and I experienced the worst OB's I've ever had. I have a pretty bad one now (ran out of meds) and I went to the Dr. yesterday and he said with the more frequent OB's he was going to prescribe me 400mg acyclovir to take twice daily for suppression. My question is, how much of a reduced number of OB's should I expect and does taking this medication cause any birth defects as my wife and I are talking of maybe having another child. Thanks in advance.

odds are that neither of you have had herpes testing actually. you will both have to ask and find out. knowing herpes 1 and 2 status before pregnancy is important.

correct, when you feel a cold sore coming on, start the 800mg acyclovir 3x/day for 2 days. that's the same dose to take when you aren't on suppressive therapy too.  sounds like your provider was torturing you with the 200mg 5x/day for 5 days dose previously?

acyclovir isn't associated with any birth defects so no worries there!

we don't really have info on suppressive therapy and oral herpes.  It helps most people have less recurrences though so it's worth trying if you are getting cold sores more than 2x/year.

when you feel the tingle of a cold sore potentially starting, up your dose to 800mg 3x/day for 2 days to help speed healing. You can even head off a cold sore if you start it early enough.

has your wife had herpes igg blood testing to know her status since you are thinking of more children? have you been tested for hsv2?
