A visual diagnosis of herpes is fine for the purpose of starting treatment however it is important to confirm infection too.

if your lesion culture comes back negative for herpes, wait and get a type specific herpes igg blood test to see what your status is.

do you have a regular partner?

I know what you mean.  I'm currently awaiting to be retested for HSV-2.  It is the most emotionally draining thing I have been through.  A lot of people have the disease and is way more common than thought.  Try not to worry and just await for the test results.  What was the reason for seeing your doctor

Not a specific type obviously.  You should go back and have a swab culture done or a type specific blood test.  You can come back with questions after you get your test results.
