counselor opinion

Mrs. Warren,

I've written before. Please browse the previous posts if you need to, as they contain more detail than this thread.  However, I took your suggestion and had the western blot test done, and it said "Negative for antibody to hsv1 and hsv2 by Western Blot."         done 1 yr. after sex.

It's reassuring. My previous Herpeselect test's were also negative for both hsv1 and hsv2, every time out to 6 mo. 2 negative cultures, too, albeit one was 2 days after my first symptom appeared, it had already began healing, PA said not to worry about it being hsv by appearance.

None the less, for the last 6 mo. I've not had any significant symptoms. I had a small pimple looking bump in my pubic hair, above my penis (NO hair emerging) which made me think, however it didn't look blister like, or ruptured, just went away in 5 or 6 days.

-I also had a swollen finger with a rash on my middle finger (intermediate phlange), came from nowhere. Of course I thought whitlow. It popped up 5 months after I last had sex,  No pain / very little itch, never had any blisters, it was a little swollen and lumpy with very dry cracking skin. I showed PA 6 days after it appeared. She said looked like irritated skin, prescribed 2.5 hydrocortisone, gone in another 5-7 days. Sound like whitlow?

I've changed my dr. He brought up test sensitivity and PCR swabs, so I'm guessing he has some idea about herpes. He didn't object running the Western Blot.  However, with me describing my symptoms and in light of the neg. WB he said were probably not dealing with hsv here. I asked him for a referral to see someone for my anxiety/OCD.

-I don't want to postpone moving on with holding onto swabs, waiting for something to come. I'd like to get back into dating without the fear of this will come back to haunt me.

-My finger?

-I'm asking your counselor opinion on how to proceed.  In light of the symptoms I've had, negative ELISA and WB out to 1 yr., what would you advise your own patient?

Thank you

Don't worry about being firm, tough love is the best kind some times. Thank you. That was the answer I was looking for, and, ultimately needed.

YOur finger does not sounds like whitlow, not at all.
I think you should today, right now, decide once and for all that you don't have herpes.  There has been absolutely no  test that even suggests that you might be infected nor a provider.  The western blot is very reliable, and I think you need to start believing the facts instead of deciding that some how you have a better idea what is going on here than all the clinicians or tests that you have done.  I would advise my own patient who was still stuck on worrying about herpes to seek serious counseling for being stuck in some make believe world with some imaginary problem.  I'm sorry to be so firm with you, but you asked.  The issue of do have you have herpes has long ago been settled.  Now you just have to adjust to that reality.
