get it back?

Hi,

I am HSV-1 positive.  In discussing safe sex with my partner he made a statement that I'm not sure is true.

Like I said, I am positive for HSV-1.  If, god forbid, I were to give it to him (lets say, oral to genital) and then we had sex, would I then get outbreaks in my genitals?

He says 'no,' that since I already have the virus I cannot be re-infected with it.

I say that sounds strange when you consider the risks of auto-inoculation.  I have heard that if you touch a sore and then touch yourself you can give it to yourself in the new spot.  Which would mean that if I can give it to myself in a new spot that he could give it to me in a new spot.

Please clarify.

Thanks

the likelihood that someone with hsv1 orally will then get the infection genitally is incredibly low.  Having hsv1 orally gives you significant protection from contracting it later on genitally -  not 100% but it's close.   follow the op's post on the expert forum for more info.

Hello clare607,

It is true of the risks of auto-inoculation. If you pass from oral to his genital then he can pass to your genital. The hsv-1 now in these days are relatively common to infect the genitals.

Take care!
