help deciphering blood tests

I was exposed 6 weeks ago to HSV 6 weeks ago with a failed condom.  I had no break out over the next 6 weeks.  My health care provider suggested if I was that worried to have the blood test in 6 weeks.  I had the blood test and am very confused by the results.  It showed negative for HSV 1 and positive for HSV 2 with a result of 1.24.  I'm very confused by the negative HSV 1 result as I spent years in my 20's and 30's having oral cold sores.  I'm very confused by the results.  Do I have it or no?  Could it be a mixup with the negative HSV1?  I would have thought that one would have definately been positive.  What does this mean for my future even though after having been exposed I had no outbreak.  I'm incredibly confused and frustrated over not understanding the results.

As Grace told you may be its a false positive but in the 2nd hand may be your old cold sore was hsv2 not hsv1.
Next time you get cold sore or blister in mouth go to swab it.

Thank you.

at this point just wait and repeat your same herpes igg blood test in a few months. cheaper and easier to get than the WB.

after doing some research and speaking with the University of Washington Virology Research Clinic, it appears that the Elisa test has roughly 50% false positive in this very low positive level.  What I have found suggests that going with the Western Blot IGg test may prove to be more accurate.

Do you have thoughts or experience with this test?  The Virology Research Clinic suggest at 4 months post encounter as you did.  After reading the studies involving the Elisa, it leaves me a little less than reassured as far as accuracy goes.

even the best blood tests still miss 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections. if you know you have a history of cold sores, you know you have hsv1 regardless of the results.

your hsv2 is a low negative. because you tested early, at this point you need to just wait and repeat your hsv2 igg test sometime between the 3-4 month post encounter mark and go from there.
