I've been divorced for over a year and decided it's time to start dating. I'm 38. I was married for six years. The last time I had sex was with my now ex-husband. At my recent annual gyn exam, I asked for a full STD screen. I didn't expect anything to come back positive but I thought it would be good to have the tests done so that I could share them if/when I entered into a new relationship.
Well, everything came back negative except for HSV 2. I received the results today over the phone. After reading about false-positives, I called back and spoke with the NP to get the lab values and the name of the test. Oh, she said she'd never heard of false positives. Great.
The test was run through LabCorps. She said it is the HSV specific antibodies IgG.
I tested negative for HSV-1
I tested positive for HSV-2 with a value of 2.47 (lab ref range: 0-0.9)
I've never had any symptoms. I've never had any abnormal pap results. I can't remember the last time I had a yeast infection or urinary tract infection.
So, my question -- what's the likelihood it's a false positive? I've read conflicting accounts about what it means when HSV-1 is negative. Some have said that it's more likely when HSV-1 is negative and HSV-2 is positive, that HSV-2 diagnosis is accurate. But I've read other accounts that the HSV-1 diagnosis matters not.
I'm sick about this.
