Herpes Question

Hello Doctor,

About 11 days agp (January 21, 2012) I had a homosexual encounter with a young black male. He said he had never had sexual intercourse before - he had only made out and given oral sex to a single individual, once. We discussed it for awhile - he seemed honest, and to be telling the truth.

I'm in my twenties (25), and have never had a sexual encounter before.

Against my better judgement, we made out (kissed, sometimes deeply, and with tongue) for awhile and engaged in mutual masturbation  We both kept our shirts on. He climbed on top of me, and briefly his skin (and penis) touched my body. Mostly, we lay side by side. I eventually put an extra-strength Lifestyles condom on, and placed my penis near the opening of his anus.  My penis entered partially (only the tip, and for a second or two), but never engaged in full-on anal sex.  I didn't see any open blisters, lesions, etc, near his anus or buttocks area. In any event, I said I felt we were going too fast - we took a break. I looked at his lips - didn't see any cold sores. Eventually, we engaged in masturbation again, but never climaxed. He never engaged in anal sex with me.

Two days ago (apx a week and one-day post exposure), I noticed a small blister on my upper lip (left side), and felt a hot tingling and pain (from my lip almost up to my nose). My assumption is that I'd contracted HSV1, and that this was a cold sore.

In addition, I've felt that my scrotum, penis shaft, and buttocks area have had a hot, burning sensation. I'm worried it may be HSV2. I've checked, but 10-11 days post-exposure, I don't see any blisters or abnormalities.

Also, I'd been cutting fabric prior to the encounter - I had rough/compromised skin on my thumbs, but not open wounds.

I was wondering what your thoughts would be in regards to the likelihood of having contracted HSV2. I'm pretty upset about my likely contraction of HSV1, and I'm concerned that I've also contracted HSV2. Thank you

If you would like a reply from them, you will need to post a new post on their STD expert site.

Thanks for your reply Dr Warren.
As for the blister near my lip, yes it's still there.
In regards to HSV 2, would there be any way that Dr Hook or Handsfield might have any further comments on my case? I'm probably being over-anxious, but I'd be interested in hearing their opinion.  Though i see from your bio you are clearly a herpes expert.

During my encounter, our bodies brushed up quite close (pressed together for a short period of time), and I'm just concerned that would be a possible avenue to HSV2.

Thanks again

I think there is virtually no chance you contracted HSV 2.  Your behaviors definitely fall under the category of safe sex.  I think the feelings that you are describing in the genital area are likely hyperawareness of the genital area or perhaps sensations associated with a lot of masturbation?

As for your lip - is the blister still there?  Did you have anyone look at it or swab test it for you?  If it is still there, please go have a swab test done.  Can you tell me about the course of the blister?
