how common is a false negative from a swab?

my results came back negative, but i went back today as i have a new sore and they still think its herpes :(

i had a swab done the day the blisters appeared last time (3wk ago) and all my other tests have come back negative too. how common is it for a swab to be wrong?

ugh omg, I know this was posted over 2 years ago but I'd really like to know your results because I'm literally going through the EXACT same thing now. What ended up happening?

ok so dared to have sex for first time in at least 4months, and guess what, back to the clinic!!! the lesion has opened back up so im all sore, and my skin around it is a little sore too. apparently i have vaginosis now, and have been tested for everything else so will have to wait and see yet again.
though id keep this updated, one day i would like my sex life to go back to how it was!!

10wk from my first incident!
went back to the clinic as i suspected whatever it is, hadnt gone away. i dont have symptoms but it turns out i was right, i still have thrush. i have a lesion which is most probably caused by thrush (i didnt know it could do that!) and the doctor this time said its unlikely i have herpes, allthough he didnt see me when i had sores and was in agony.
1. can thrush get so bad that it seems to be herpes?? i had blisters and pain and thought myself that i had it.
2. how can you reduce thrush? i've had it since middle of may and used the cream etc

8wk and counting ppl!!! soreness comes and goes, if it is herpes its taking its sweet time leaving!! shall leave it until the end of june then revisit the clinic, that way it will have been 12wk in total and they cant possibly tell me to wait and see!

yeh thats what i thought, men seem to get it easy! think im gonna wait another couple of wk then if it hasnt changed im off back to see what they say. they seem convinved its herpes but nothing seems to be making it better. im pretty sure his culture will come back negative as there wasnt a lot there.
blood tests in a month or so i think. i wanna wait until i stand a good chance of getting a correct result for those.

sometimes it just sucks to be female :(  continue to follow up every few weeks at clinic as needed. they might need to retest for yeast in a few weeks as well as for bacterial vaginosis too to see if either of them are going on.  sometimes when you treat for yeast, it causes your ph to go the other way and allows for bacteria to overgrow too. they might also need to start thinking other causes other than herpes too depending on what your partner's results show.

he is waiting for test results, but his jus looked a bit like spots and disappeared day after.
its back to normal except for one tiny bit, which looks like there is still a tiny sore there (it was huge before) doesnt hurt at all, but i think if i tried anything i would be in agony. just seems to be taking forever, its now 3wk since my last trip to the clinic and i've been treating the thrush too. dont know if thats gone as i never had any symptoms of it in the first place, but obviously that could be slowing things down too. just a bit itchy sometimes.
just doesnt seem to be going away :(

usually once the skin is back to normal it's healed.

did your partner manage to get tested yet?

how do you know if it's healed up?? the first time i thought it'd healed up (it didnt hurt and there wasnt anything to see) i had sex and came back to square 1!
the sores dont seem to be going, jus sort of shrinking a bit. doesn't hurt at all any more which is a bonus. jus want to make sure i know if its healing up or not, as it doesnt seem to be doing anything and its been ages now

no results yet!! just curious. at my last check up they found thrush and gave me cream. i realise this could be why its taking weeks to heal. the sores havent really healed, jus kinda shrunk. they said to use the cream for thrush, but do i wait until the sores are gone? or do i start using it now to get rid of the thrush, which should then heal up the herpes a bit quicker?
i dont want to spread anything, im being v careful

the website I recommended is put together by the top researchers in herpes in the US. It's reliable and has lots of info.  It breaks down exactly the accuracy rates of lesion cultures and several different herpes blood tests for you.

quick update, bf is off to clinic this wk. he has what look like spots, says he's sore too :(
still waiting for result of the smear (gonorrea, trichomoniasis - crap spelling lol) and my second herpes swab.
at least if one of our tests come back positive we'll know what it is then!

thanks, im getting very mixed info. majority of it says the swab test is 90% accurate and the blood tests are very unreliable, unless we wait a few months obviously.

no he should get tested now to see what his status is.

the false negatives on the igg blood tests are less than 5
% if you wait at least 4 months after the encounter to have them done.

www.herpesdiagnosis.com has terrific info under the how to get tested for herpes section. this is a very reputable website that was put together by some of the top herpes researchers in the US.

no he hasnt but obviously there's no point until a few months down the line. the false negative rates on blood tests are way higher than swab tests too. so far i've been told 5% and almost never for the swabs, i went in as soon as it appeared too

it's really helpful if you just keep adding to your original post instead of making a new one each time.

lesion cultures have a 70% false negative rate. you'll need to follow up with the type specific herpes igg blood testing in a few months to see what your status is.

has your partner gotten the blood test done yet or is he still listening to who told him he didn't need to get it?
