how do you contract herpes-1,2

i was diagnosed with herpes 1. ive read that this generally hapens in the mouth, with cold sores and things like that. I havent experienced any cold sore but also read that you might not see them.....i am planning on having oral sex using a condom...however, when it comes to kissing, should i avoid it since i might pass it along to my sex partner?
and how do you obtain herpes-2?
thanks

did you have a blood test that came back as hsv1+?

http://www.ashastd.org/herpes/herpes_learn_oralherpes.cfm  has terrific and accurate information on oral herpes for more reading. It includes precautions to take for you and a partner.  You need to know the status of a partner in order to decide what precautions to take together for oral sex because of hsv1 orally.

Hsv2 is transmitted through mostly sex. You can contract it orally from performing oral sex on a partner but the risk of that is low. Once again, you need to know a partners status in order to make educated decisions about what precautions to take for hsv2 too.
