Looking for Test Interpretation Help

Hi, I'm looking for some help interpreting my HSV 1 and 2 testing info. I am a 23-year-old female. My Dr. told me that based on the IGM test I am HSV-2 positive and have been for about a year, but I know that the IGM tests are considered to be unreliable.

Herpeselect HSV-1 IGM negative
HSV-2 IGM positive, titre 1:20

HSV-1 IGG .31 (neg)
HSV-2 IGG .17 (neg)

My most recent partner (about 3 months) told me that he had cold sores as a kid, which I know is usually indicative of HSV-1, but has yet to be tested. I have never seen an outbreak, although my Dr. thinks that I was misdiagnosed with a yeast infection about 14 months ago and suggested I go on Valtrex. How long does it typically take for the IGG antibodies to appear? I thought it was about 3-4 months, but my Dr. told me a year. Any help clearing up the confusion would be appreciated.

I think you had a false positive igm like many folks have which is why we no longer recommend its use in adults!

Hey grace, follow up to this post. Two months later got a second test done and the full panel- igg and igm for both 1 &2 came back negative. Don't have test results for previous partner. Do you think that indicates a previous exposure that my body "fought off" or a false positive? I know it's hard to know without his test results but just looking for another opinion.  Thanks!

get your partner tested. if he's only hsv1+, you don't need any further testing since you've been with him for 3 months.

Thanks, Grace! I really appreciate your response. Any insight as to the time to develop the IGG antibodies? I want to get tested again but want to make sure I give it enough time.

your partner will need tested too so that you two can make educated decisions about what precautions to take in your relationship.

your provider is under educated about herpes blood testing :(  it's actually malpractice to tell someone they have herpes based on a herpes igm test it's so inaccurate!!  Encourage your provider to update their herpes testing knowledge to better serve their patients as well as to protect themselves from lawsuits!
