suppressive therapy

when starting suppressive therapy when does it start to take effect? I am planning on being with someone for one month starting August 18 and read that you can take medicine to help suppress the herpes. I will take acyclovir..thank you

August 18 is plenty of time to get into system. Suppressive therapy is great but remember nothing is 100%. I would still use condoms to have even more protection.

you need to start suppressive therapy 5 days before it starts effectively suppressing the virus.

thank you. If I never had any outbreaks on penis would condoms actually help for protection against herpes. I had only outbreak in groin area.

You do shedd the virus from different locations.  Condoms can be used to help lower the risk of transmission but it is not by a whole lot.  The supressive therapy is the best use and in addition to condoms does help reduce a lot more.

if you take daily suppressive therapy, use condoms and avoid sex anytime you have anything going on genitally, the risk to a female partner is 2-3% over the course of an entire year.
