unprotected exposure

Hello,

I am a 28 year old male who more than likely has ruined his life. On Sep. 1,3,4 and 5, I had sexual intercourse unprotected. New to the relationship we had a conversation about std's and assured one another we both had no known diseases. On the 5th I noticed a slight burning on the outside of my penis. I went running and wrote it off. On Labor day Sep.6th she informed me that she had lied and had contracted HSV II years ago but she was sorry. Any way, I began taking her prescription acyclovir. I know what a saint right?

I was tested on Sep.15th for all std's, literally; of course my results were negative. I realize that it was too early for my body to have developed antibodies and will test again in a few weeks. In the mean time my penis has continued to hurt but not constantly, mostly slight burning sensations. I am experience slight redness and very centralized stinging sensations that are not consistent at all. This stinging has occurred several times on both the head and the shaft of my penis. There is a tingling or feeling of general uncomfortableness inside my urinary tract that is constant. It does not hurt to urinate and there are no visible signs of an outbreak. I have also ran a fever off and on and felt run down with loss of appetite. Odd pains continue to occur throughout my lower body. Relatively sure its not psychosomatic.

Recently on the 23rd my lymph nodes in my groin began to swell so bad it hurts to walk. Today, Oct. 3rd the slight burning has not been prevalent but it comes and goes.

I have done a lot of research and I am currently on meds for a uti and the acyclovir. Can Herpes cause this kind of pain with no visible signs? Why would this be lasting so long without an outbreak and why would it take my lymph nodes so long to swell? How long can herpe pain last? Is this typical of HSV II?

The girl I slept with said she was not broken out but who knows.

Thank you.

There is no way to know if you have herpes based on your symptoms.  Your symptoms are way too vague.  AGain, I would recommend that you stop taking antivirals and test in 4 months form any possible exposure.

Sorry Terri, didn't mean to submit. Anyhow last night and several times before during the past month I've noticed intense stinging. This time near my anus. The virus travels through nerves, and several times in my lower vicinities I have noticed this stinging. This is usually a sign or symptom of prodrome correct? Does this symptom occur on individuals without outbreaks? Also in my craze I have noticed what looks like slight folliculitis on my buttocks. I realize symptoms vary, and I am not sure there is a norm.

I continue to have slight burning on my penis.

I really don't want to have an outbreak; I hope I don't have it at all. If I continue taking medication could this prevent an initial outbreak or do you think I won't break out at all? Also, I realize the chances of this being something else are not good. Could taking medication prolong my initial outbreak? My lymph nodes are still swollen today but not nearly as painful. It's now 29 days since my first symptom.

Thank you.

Good, so the correct testing was done, and that's good.  I agree that with her taking daily antivirals, your risk of infection is really low, I think you have little to worry about.  If you are still worried, you can retest for HSV in 3-4 months.

I agree that you should definitely stop taking acyclovir so it doesn't impact your herpes test results.  When you were tested for all STDs, are you absolutely certain you were tested for herpes?  And were you tested using an IgM or IgG antibody test?  Please look carefully at those results and provide me with the answer if you wish.  Your symptoms are quite vague, and I can't really tell you if they are consistent with herpes or not - if pushed, I would say probably not.  What antibiotics are you taking and how much?

Due to the fact the she was taking acyclovir and not experiencing an outbreak, your risk was low.

Lymph node swelling can be a symptom of HSV, but on and off burning is not.  To solely experience pain without any other kinds of manifestations (lesions, ulcers, etc) is rare.

Taking acyclovir may delay development of antibodies, so it may be in your best interest to quit taking them so your blood test at 3-4 months will be more accurate.

Good luck.
