How long can you carry genital warts before transmission.

I have been married for 24 years. Can my husband have had gential warts for 24 years and just now transmit them to me from before our marriage?

I never had them or got them. My husband is trying to tell me he got them from our daughters foot warts. I was told he could have gotten them from before we were married. I didn't think the virus could live for 24 years and I never got them, but he did. Our family Dr called me and had me come in for a papsmear because my husband had warts. I have never had them and my pap came back as clear as it has since before I was married 24 years ago and still is clear today.

Most often HPV will become active within 6-12 months of being aquired however it is very possible for the virus to remain dormant for years before becoming active - if it ever does. The virus can alternately go from dormancy to active so it is almost impossible to know how long someone has had the virus or when it is 'active' and infectious. Sometimes GW's are not even visible so people may be transmitting them without knowing. It may even be that you aquired a strain(s) of low risk HPV prior to your marriage and the virus has just now become active.
