Can a normal pap smear still mean HPV??

I got a pap smear and HPV test recently, and I just got my results in the mail.  It said that my recent pap smear came back normal and negative for malignancy.  Does this mean I'm in the clear for HPV?? I had unprotected sex 2-3 times with my boyfriend who I later found out had genital warts.  How is it possible that I didn't get it if he had it?!

the genital warts would not show up in the pap. The pap only displays a type of HPV which causes cell changes and can in some rare cases lead to cancer. The type of HPV that results in genital warts are never cancerous, just unpleasant, and are diagnosed when visible wart symptoms are present.
