HPV High Risk

I just found out yesterday my pap came back with abnormal cells. My doctor said it was low grade, but my HPV was high risk. Since they caught it when it was low grade does that mean that I could potentially have cancer cells in my body right now. I got tested about 10 months ago when I found out I was pregnant and I didn't have it or it didn't show itself. Now I am wondering if I have had it for almost a year, why is it still low grade, or is it already pre-cancerous. I have to go back in another 6 months, but thats a long time to wait to find out if you have a life changing disease. Please no rude comments, Thank you, for your support and answers.

Hi, no it is not worth to worry about low grade changes. If they are caused by hpv, they usually are, most probably they'll go away on their own. It may take more than a year though. So patience and correct check ups (paps) are important. Please read the following link. You may also search for other answers by Dr Handsfield, who is an expert in this area. His comments are very reassuring.

There is some confusion between low grade and low risk. Low risk HPV causes warts, high risk HPV causes cell changes (which you have). When it comes to high grade changes, that means the next stage if the cells continue to change will be cancer, low grade changes mean it has a minor chance of turning into cancer.

Seeing as you only found out ten months ago, it is more than likely the cells have not progressed into cancer, as cancer takes a long time. They could of devloped into moderate/severe (high grade) changes though.

When a woman is diagnosed with high risk hpv, the usual protocol when it's low grade is to repeat the pap in the time you state rather then give treatment as the virus has a good chance of going away on it's own. If you go back and the HPV has gotten worse, they will probably suggest treatment as high grade changes are more likely to turn into cancer without treatment
