HPV without sex?

I am a 30 year woman. I have been in a monogamous relationship all my life. So has my partner.

I recently visited the doctor for a routine Pap Test in order to fill my prescription. Imagine my surprise when I was told that I have high risk HPV (thankfully the Pap was normal). Here's my question: how can I get HPV all of a sudden? I even had a copoloscopy last year (my doctor suggested it) and that did not show up HPV. I have had Paps done for a long time on a yearly basis now, and never has HPV been found. Of course, neither of us have any symptoms, which seems to be a very common thing.

My doctor continues to insist that one of us could have gotten it at some point. But both of us were virgins when we met and have not been unfaithful ever! She finally conceded that the lab test could be wrong, but now I am beginning to really start wondering. I read a recent paper by an Austrian Group that showed the high incidence of HPV in young girls who have never been sexually active.

Please help! Could you kindly say how often false positives occur? Also, should I discontinue my OC use? Could you also give some figures for the following:
1) what is the percentage of women with high risk HPV (but normal Pap Tests) dying from cancer?
2) by how much percent does the use of OC increase this risk?
3) what is the probability that my partner will get oral cancer? Penile Cancer?

I agree with kdaily, but would like to add that many people don't "count" all sexual experiences, especially if maintaining virginity is important. Touching or grinding genitals can spread the virus, penetration is not needed. Of course there is also risk with anal sex, and some risk with oral sex. I am sure this expalins some of the "virgins" with HPV.

To add, Penile cancer is really rare in developed countries.

Sorry I did forget to mention that your doctor should have done a follow up to double check the results.

If you want numbers you'll have to go the expert forum,

I'm not sure what the likey hood of a false positive for HPV would be, But if you were both virgins enter your relationship and have been together for since, then someone went out side the relationship, Highrisk and lowrisk HPV is transmitted through sexual encounters. Again I don't know if you can have a false pos. for HPV... Others are more then able to respond with more info or you can go to the Expert forum for all the percents of your questions.
