It is surprising how little some doctors know about this. From what I have read in this forum, your doctor is typical. Your boyfriend can get HPV from you and probably has already contracted it. That is almost certain. Whether you or he ever develop warts depends on which of the many HPV viruses you have. Did your doctor give you an HPV test? If not, you should get tested. The reason for getting tested is that it gives you some valuable information. You will find out whether you have a low risk HPV as well as the high risk HPV you obviously have. Only high risk HPV's cause dysplasia. Dysplasia can lead to cancer. Whether it leads to cancer depends on the particular strain you have, how virulent it is, and how strong your immune system. If you have a low risk HPV then you have one of the viruses that can cause warts. Usually warts show up within a few months of exposure but that isn't always true. The virus can lie dormant then suddenly flare up during a time when your immune system has been weakened by stress or other illness. You should talk to your doctor about taking the HPV vaccine. It will protect you against the worst of the high risk and low risk viruses. You probably have not been exposed to all 4 of the viruses contained in the vaccine and it could help your situation by protecting you from future exposure to those. Be very consistent with your PAP smears and get a colposcopy if you want more information or your doctor recommends it. For the record, your doctor won't give you anything but research shows that taking 5mg hydrocodone and 400 mg ibuprofen before the procedure makes it much more comfortable. I can verify that from personal experience, too. Good luck.
3rd question clarification.
Sorry I reread my question and it didn't really make sense. Anyway what I meant to say was that my doctor said that my bf could get genital warts from me. That is what confused me because I don't have genital warts, my HPV caused low grade dysplasia. So my question was since it is likely he has already been exposed to my strain of HPV, is it possible that he could get genital warts if we continue to have sex? How long does it take genital warts to show up?
