Everything I've read online says that the act of sex is to be avoided during recovery. One's immune system has to be strong as possible to aid in the recovery and sex (esp unsafe sex) does not help.
Visible active warts do make it more likely to infect someone but no one can say that people with invisible warts can't infect anyone too.
It is very very unlikely, so be reassured by that.
Could you please clarify "to also not delay their recovery"? Does the very act of having sex have an effect on the infected person? Also is it known whether or not warts are more easily passed on when the person has visible warts? Im a bit confused about all this. Thanks in anticipation.
Genital warts are caused by HPV which is spread through skin to skin contact, including genital, oral, and anal sexual contact. There is some chance the virus could be spread via genital-hand-genital contact (i.e. touching a partner's genitals, then touching your own with the same hand). So based on this, I would say she did not accidentally infect herself unless she used the same hand on herself. But this isn't as easy as it sounds. It's not as easy to be infected as it is via genital, oral and anal sex.
When touching someone's genitals, it is always good practice to use a different hand on your partner than the one you use on yourself. Especially when one partner has active genital warts. Ideally, the person with active warts should refrain from all sex until the warts go away. Not only to avoid infecting their partner but to also not delay their recovery. Or at the very least, use a latex condom.
