9cm fundal fibroid

by Nel14, Oct 23, 2009 12:33AM
I am 37 year old.  Two normal pregnancies.  During my regular check up this year(Sep 09), I was told that I had cervixcitis (sp) ( I did experience some slight bleeding once after intercourse and again after the exam)  I was prescribed Flagyl (sp).  I also told my doctor that I was feeling pressure in my abdomen.  She recommended an ultrasound.  It revealed a large 9 cm fundal fibroid.   My periods have always been normal, but this month (Oct 09) instead of my normal flow, I spotted for 13 days (I started two days after the ultrasound which is when I was supposed to start my period).  On the 13th day is when I had my consultation with my doctor about the fibroid. My doctor prescribed progesterone and my spotting has since stopped.
I was also diagnosed this year with hypothyroidism (no medication prescribed).

My questions are:  Could it be my thyroid that is causing all these problems all of a sudden?
Can an ultrasound detect the difference between a benign fibroid tumor and a cancerous tumor?
How can I be sure that it is just a fibroid and not cancer?

Had I been told that it was just a fibroid and my period had been normal, then I probably would not  be so anxious about the possibility of cancer.

cervicitis is inflamation (inflammation) of the cervix, flagyl is an antibiotic many uses one of which is vaginal infections, with you having inflammation and being prescribed the antibiotic did your dr give you a name of your infection or a hint as to his thoughts?

Hypothyroidism effects 1 out of 10 women when we approach middleage , Sorry I did not which your just a tad young for, but it happens, there is a great genetic componet also family members w hypothyrodism? Are you now on synthroid?should be..ask demand a full thyroid panel,,must say FULL or they will give you the cheap test. Please visit our thyroid site its run by a great friend of mine you will find much more infor there it is not my are 0f expertise.
question 1. No its not caused from thyroid

2. No ultrasound cannot tell difference between begning and cancer, Ask for CA125,,and a CBC  a FNB can tell for certain if its begnine  most all fibroids are.

3. Fibroids are very common and drs can tell what they are by the shape.

Its perfectly normal to worry of cancer , most all on here do. It sounds like regular fibroids to me.

If this is a correct diagnois you will have a few options a surgery to remove the fibroids or a chemical induced menopause to stop the fibroids and eventually shrink them,

advice dont jump the gun on a hysterectomy..try other methods first a leep should do the trick fro the fibroids.

about the thyroid..is your skin hair dry? loss of sex drive? slight depression? weight gain? constipation? these symptoms are common ones I know..

check out the thyroid forum,,and best of luck,C

Hi Cherie,

Thank you for your response on my questions.
You mentioned that doctors can usually tell it is a fibroid by the shape.  Does this mean that fibroids tend to show up spherical in shape were as cancers tend to me asymetrical?  I will be going for blood work in November.  I will definately ask my primary physician for the CA125.

All my concerns have stemmed from the fact, that up to last month, I had not had any symptoms, other that the abdominal pressure during sex.  All of a sudden, I have cervicitis and then the spotting instead of my period.   My doctor checked my cervix again at my consultation and said that the cervicitis had cleared up.

As to my thyroid, I am not on any medication because I am still within the normal range (but very close to the upper limit) on my normal blood work.  My doctor had suspected that there might be something wrong with my thyroid for some years now, but it was not untill this year that I had blood work done that actually checked for it.

I have always had problems with my skin, in particular psoriasis (especially on the scalp)  I seem to have the scalp psoriasis under control but I fear that I have lost a lot of hair because of it and probably in conjunction with my hypothyroid.  I have also always been overweight.  My sex drive is normal.  I have regular bowel movements (2 if not more a day) but I do suffer from chronic anal fissures.

Thank you again. You really helped to alleviate my anxiety.
