Hysterectomy

I am scheduled to have a partial Hysterctomy because I've been diagnosed with Andemyosis. on December 15th (just my uterus will be removed, so far). What can I expect in regards to pain, recovery time and emotions. I've had my tubes tied for 4 years so I am fine about not having any more children. My doctor is not sure if she has to cut me or go vaginally. I am a little nervous and scared about this major procedure. Any feeback would be greatly appreciated. I am 38 years old.

Sorry to hear of your problems. I also had severe diarrhea after my hysterectomy. It went on far too long because I did not seek help. It probably made matters a bit worse than they otherwise would have been. It's possible this is just from the effects of the antibiotic they give you to prevent infection. But if it does not resolve soon, please have it checked out. Post back and let us know what you find out and how you are doing.

Hi just a quick thought ask Dr if she thinks it could be possible that endometiral tissue /scar tisue etc....could be causg sciatic nerve problems , sounds possible the  you describe back pain radiates to leg....a Nerologist could very easily diagnosis this with a simple non invasive test

That's great that your husband is taking a week of work to be home with you. You'll feel tired and sore but they'll send a prescription for pain meds home with you. Do as Cherie said and just be a couch potato. Have your husband pick up some movies and magazines for you. Before you go in the hospital cook some food that can be frozen and popped in the microwave. We'll be here for you every step of the way.   Remar

Thanks for the insight. I've heard of the DaVinci Robotic- I'm going to inquire about that. I think I am more concerned about the pain- and also feeling helpless. My husband just wants me to feel better so he is taking the first week off to help- after that, my sisters, and nieces will take care of me. YEAH no more monthly, the great thing is I keep my ovaries so menopause will be not start soon.

Thanks again for the insight. This sight really helps and put my mind at ease. So, now, its countdown time.

Thank you for the insight- yes I was going from specialist to specialist as well until I ended up at the Gyne- At first, my primary thought it was something to do with my  hip- so I was going to a different specialist. After he performed tests, he said, go see the Gyne- and plus it was time for my yearly check up. As I explained to her, she knew exactly what it was- ran tests and blood work, checked for cancer and then had the MRI to confirm.

I was diagnosed after having so many tests done (ultrasound, lab work, Bioenema (?spelling) then the last test MRI with and without contrast. Thats when it showed up. My Dr. was very nice, and very determined to find out what was causing the pain (started back in Feb '10). She tried all alternatives before "Hyster" was the final option. I trust her completely and very safe with her. the pain is centered on my right side, and it radiates through my hip bone and leg. A week or so before my cycle (by the way comes like every 20-22 days now) i am in so much pain, it's hard to even get up. So I am looing forward to no more pain.I hope your doctor just give you the thumbs up to have it done. Like you, I am so ready to get on with my life.

hi ther I had my hyster for exactly the same reason,,in my years of being cl I think unless its cancer( yours isnt) that the recovery is basically the same regardless of cause because the procedure is the same....

try to find a dr who can do the DaVinci Robotic assisted hyster...thats what I had thats what I advise all to try and get its expensive some insurance cos balk at it BUT recovery is sooooo much easier as is the surgery itself,,less bleeding the scars are actualy 3 sm visable ones about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch the other is hidden in your belly buttton

yes no matter what it will hurt and hurt bad for first week first two days are horrid ,,the nurses will have you up walking the next day and youll hate them for it but its the best thing for you! one problem immediatley post op many women have is the abdomen is distended with gas the gas gets trapped ( not all) but its not like regular gas its trapped in abdomen cavity you have to work it into intestines to get rid of..way to do that walking..

just remember post op the least you do the more you lay around read, do crosswords watch tv ( you get me) the better and quicker you will heal,,,do NOT lift use heat have sex do house work drive a car....no pushing as in stroller shopping cart  vaccume you really just have to be a couch potatoe

and they will for sure give you narcotics to bring home they help great with the pain heres the issue after a hyster most are frightened of first bm your sore you dont want to push ..narcotics will always bind a person so MOST drs prescribe a stool softner..,,make sure you get one ,,eat lots of fiber and drink plenty of water avoic any foods know for being binding...

moodiness most always after any surgery, this is a serious surgery the recovery is not fun, but think of the end goal you will finally be pain free, its wonderful and personally I sure dont miss the monthly at all....some /rare/ ladies get post tramatic surgical issues,.,this is usually women who dont have a support system at home,,,ask for help accept those who offer

if someone can be with you first 48 hrs that would be good I couldnt even put my own socks on...this is the type thing where if your a good patient listen literally to all dr says you will feel better each and every  day ..dont let that by week 3 or so make you think you can do house work etc,,,,remember the outside looks fine the inside does take 6 weeks min. to heal

any more questions or if I can help at all your welcome to pm me,,,,good luck drop me a note if nothing else a few days before your surgery so that I will remember to check up on you after ok...

hugs\

i hope all goes well with your hysterectomy.  i had mine a few years ago.  like you i had my tubes tied prior.  as far as pain an recovery....usually you have a short hospital stay unless you have any health problems.  i had to stay longer due to other health problems and a reaction to the anestesia.  my pain wasnt as bad as everyone said it was going to be.  i had a c-section in 92 so they went in through the same scar and did mine that way.  like you i was nervous and we are about the same age.  they had put mine off for years saying i was to young but i was having so many problems i had to go from specialist to specialist before they finally said it was a medical neccessity.

Hi - I hope all goes well for your op.  I'm not yet scheduled for a hysterectomy, although in a strange way I wish I was because I feel that's where I'll end up anyway and would like to get on with my life the meantime.

As far as recovery and pain relief is concerned, I've been with other ladies in hospital over recent weeks who've had their hysterectomy and it seems that the staff really do offer quite good palliative care these days compared to before and I'm sure you will be fine.

My question on a personal level is how advanced is your endometriosis?  I had a laparoscopy on Monday and they just fitted a coil to try and deal with it hormonally which I wasn't at all happy with and expected to be scheduled for hysterectomy - apparently, this is not possible for me as it is so extensive - I don't know how true it is or whether they are fobbing me off and putting off the inevitable.  Any further info would be appreciated.

Good luck for your op - you should be feeling much better by Christmas.
