Hysterectomy decision.

I am 55 years old, still menstruating and have a 6.7 cm fibroids as well as several small ones.  Will the fibroids shrink significantly after menopause? Should I consider an hysterectomy? I feel constantly full, am constipated, there is pressure on my bladder and do have very heavy and irregular periods.

its a big surgury at your age your so close to menopause your problems may dissapear with it, (may not I do not know your
dx) it sounds like your uterus is obviously putting pressure on organs or you may have scar/endometrial tissue or addhesions putting pressure on organs these 3, I mention can do some very odd things..my ovary was attached to bowel w scar tissue and my bladder was attached to uterus w same.

question about constipation are you taking narcotics? they are ALWAYS constipating..its necessary to drink 2 or 3 big glasses of water with and I advise a stool softner (colace is best in my opinion) you must ask your drs advice on this but its considered safe and its likely he will say good idea. even if your not taking binding meds its better /safer to take a stool softner and increse fluids than to take a laxative.they ar harsh on system and addicting.,.if you must to get things started first time try a fleece enema( again ask dr or pharmicist) Im not a dr but do have lots of exerience in this forum both personal and from answering tons of questions,,whenI do not know a answer I look it up. am going into health care/ and have been in your shoes, so I will do my best to help

Im 47 had hyster at 43 was told I could wait till menopause well that wasnt a choice i wanted due to my age it coulda been 20 years and i was in BIG pain..

Have you had surgery in past to remove just the fibroids? is that a option now? the fibroids should shrink and dissapear after menopause there will be no estrogen to "feed: them if you dont do HRT which you may wish to consider..its impossible to know if you may wish to have hrt or not some ladies are fine some need it bad...most symptoms of menopause that really trouble ladies are the psychological ones depression weepiness, etc  almost all have hot flashes, night sweats etc..for most these slowly dissapear,,

I would really advise you to get 2 opions before getting a hyster and do know that ovaries trickle just a tad of hormones even after menopause so its a tough call about retaining them or not,,also know that if you do retain them after a hyster its very very difficult to diagnosis ovarian cancer wo a uterus,,(pap) you will still need a yearly exam so drs can feel ovaries and they still scrape so tissue from vag walls to test for cancer.

If your interested go to my home page under my journals I have a very honest list of pre and post op tips and advice as to what to expect should you get the surgery.

best wishes..do some reading on this especially about the DaVinci robotic assisted hysterectomy .
