Scared, hysterectomy recommended

My mom passed away due to ovarian cancer (12-6-07).  I have a beautiful DD that was conceived via IVF, took lots of fertility meds.  I was with my mom during one of her consultations for OC.  Her oncologist asked mom about her daughters (there are 3 of us).  When I explained to the oncologist about my IVF and fertility meds, he looked me straight in the eyes and said, "When you are finished having children or before you are 40, get a hysterectomy, ovaries and all."  He was very concerned due to the fertility meds (although there are no foundations, no studies that link fertility meds to OC) and my mom's diagnosis.
I tried for FET, twice, both BFN.  During the 2nd FET attempt, the u/s tech noticed something on my left ovary (November 2007).  My RE didn't think anything of it.  I did.  I went back for a follow up u/s about 2 weeks ago (January 2008).  The u/s tech found a 2cm simple cyst on my left ovary (the same one as before) and a 3.5cm complex cyst on my right ovary (new find).  My OB/GYN wanted my RE to review the u/s notes.  My RE said that due to my family history he recommends a radical hysterectomy.  WHAT?!?!
Part of me was hoping for a "miracle" child sometime between now and 40... That won't happen.  My fears are: the surgery itself, hormones (I would much rather go a natural route), hair growth, hot flashes, sexual loss, etc.
I was just hoping that one of you might know something about this topic and have some much needed words of advice.

Hi there,

I had my surgery on the 1st. They took everything - uterus, ovaries and cervix. I haven't had any side effects - maybe a hot flash or two, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. So far no night sweats. The only hair growth is on my head, which is a good thing. So far no beard! LOL!

I really can't remember the name of the medications I am on, but I am going to the doctor today for an adjustment. I have noticed that I am having some hair growth which is why we are doing the adjustment. Mine are done through injections that I do on my own. The reason I went that direction is for one, I am allergic to adhiseve and number two, I wanted more control over how much hormones went into my body. If you take a pill or use a patch it is a steady amount at all times. With the shot, it starts out with a pretty high dosage and then wears off in time. So, I take them only when I feel that I need them. My use varies, one time I might need to take one in a month and the next I maybe good for six weeks. I didn't started on the hormones for about two months after my hysterectomy. I can tell you that I have not had one syptom of menepause either before I went on the hormones or since being on them. When I made the choice to start them it was because I felt like I was getting edgy and thought that I might be having hormone withdrawl. I will ask the doctor today what they are and I will let you know. I just call it the triple cocktail. One bonus side effect is that your sex drive gets a major boost.

madgeOwens - I did have the CA125 bloodtest which showed normal (thank God)... I am considering a second opinion... The words of my mom's Gyn Oncologist just ring through me... I will never forget the look on his face either...
jml - may I ask what meds you are on?  Do you think that after weaning off them you might have side affects?  Like hair growth?  Thank you for your time :o)
Twilight_Princess - how long ago was your hysterectomy?  was it ovaries and uterus?  Do you have an side affects? Like the sweats, hair growth, etc.?  Thank you :o)

Yes I agree with jml and madge - it isn't all that bad, a hysterectomy and by all means take him seriously and get another opinion. I got a second opinion before I decided on the hysterectomy.

BTW, I'm not on hormones yet. I am still researching this and I am seriously wanting to go the natural route - hopefully it will work just as well as the other.

My thought is you need a second opinion. My sil had invitro and her doctor has never mentioned a radical hysterectomy and she has family history of cancer. As far as the surgery itself. It is really not that big of a deal. I had mine in July and I went back to work the day after I got out of the hospital. The worst part of the surgery was that they blow air into you when having it and so you will feel extremely bloated for a few days. Hormones are a personal choice. I currently take an hrt because I think my body needs time to adjust. I do however plan to stop them in a year or two. It really is a personal choice and if you do not need one for health issues, I would get more information.

Hi there,
Isn't there a blood test they can give you now for Ovarian Cancer risk? Maybe someone else can give you the name of the test.  I would start there.  Have another oppinion. If it were me, I think I would take his advice VERY seriously.  You want to be sure and be there for your daughter of which you have been blessed with.  Yes I would think he would not say this to you frivolously!
