dermoid tumor b/w uterus & bladder hysterectomy?

hello,
i am a 42 yr old female and will have surgery in couple weeks to remove a 8cm & 3cm dermoid tumor from b/w my uterus and bladder.  i did not know i had anything wrong, my ob/gyn found it during pap check. but now that i know that, i wander if my lab work results on my prolactin and iron has anything to do with this mass that may be pressing on my uterus. my prolactin and iron has been gradually increasing over past 7 years and now are 65 on prolactin and my iron is 182, both are pretty high levels. after the removal of these masses, i wander if my levels will return to normal.
also, i have few other questions, my dr. recommends total hysterectomy when he opens me up to remove the tumors b/c he believes possibly the tumors will come back if i leave my reprod. organs.  if i chance to leave at least my ovaries, do you think my tumors will come back and if so how long is the normal average when they may grow back?
i really don't want to have to take hormones. we do not have any children and do not plan to have any. he also said that i have a few normal cysts on my ovaries, but my ovaries looks healthy.
i appreciate any feedback
thank you very much

gm dj..It sounds like your on track, your doctors theory on high iron makes sense, we will know for sure a week or so post op your iron should be back to normal.Your bikini insion will heal a bit slower than typical lap surgeries but I am certain its because of size of tumors doc must do this, You will definatley feel better to get these out,,I remember the first night post op that I was able to sleep through a whole night with out getting up to use the bathroom, I had never made the connection before that my enlarged uterus was pushing on bladder,,, something as simple as that , and now I sleep straight through ever night its a blessing. There is a significant chance that even with just one ovary you will have some hormonal issues, many times women just have uterus removed and that alone slows ovary function down, If this happens to you , I will help you through it, there is no need to have menopausal symptoms,,,bio identical hormones are a great help...You take care, and no worries about me, just drop a line when you can,,Cherie

cherie,
hello, i just got back from the doctor this evening. he believes that the uterus, tumors and 1 of my ovaries are damaged and/or fused together so he says that the uterus and 1 ovary has to definitely go along with the tumors. he said that he will do a bikini incision and the stitches will self-dissolve inside. i will be able to shower and start walking slowly a day after surgery. possibly only stay in hospital 1 to 2 nights.
he said he thinks it could be possible that my prolactin is being released from the tumor pressing on the uterus and/or ovary but not sure about the iron part.
i got all my pre-op stuff done today so all i have to do is show up for surgery 5-7-09.
dr says that i should feel better after this is out. since tumor has been growing, it feels like it has drain me of my energy. i am ready to get rid of it.
thank you so much, cherie, for taking time out to help me and so many other people. you are a great inspiration. i will keep you posted on how everything went. i am not the greatest on keeping up contact promptly, but i will let you know.

cat scans and mris dont always give all the "clues" an exploritory lap sounds like a very good decision on your docs part..If he can remove just the tumor and by the dx of location it seems he should be able to that would be wonderful..also if you can retain just one ovary it would be to your benifit..however many many of us have lost both ovaries and are fine..( after much tweeking of hormone replacement)  it really sounds like your in good hands.
I am uncertain of why your retaining so much iron I know it is fat soluable and too , too much can be a problem , I believe it is hard on the liver( not sure ,,about the liver part) am sure about its fat soluable and too much is not healthy...good question to ask dr. on Tues,,,as for if your body thinks your pg...anything is possible,,the human body is an amazing machine,,,very self preserving and I have seen and heard some remarkable stories....do let me know about tues...Cherie

thank you so very much for your reply and concern.
the ultrasound and doctor told me that the dermoid tumor (what they believe it is) is benign 8cm circumlum and on it's own but sitting b/w my uterus and bladder. i've been going to the same dr since i was 18 yr old. i believe that i will let him know my conerns tues. 4-28-09 appt before 5-7-09 surgery. he said that he would need to do laprotomy, exploration surgery to remove both tumors and possible ovary and/or anything that does not look healthy. i just got the phone call today.
about the iron, i eat variety. on meats, i only eat talapia, salmon, chicken and if i have salad, maybe 2-3 times a week, i eat green leaf lettuce and spinach. i didn't think that to be overload. i guess my body just likes to absorb and retain iron more. i just thought maybe my body thinks it's pregnant from possibly the mass pressing on the uterus so therefore raising prolactin and retaining iron and nutrients more???
again, thank u so much for your reply.
i will keep u posted after i talk to my doctor tues.
by the way the cat scan for some reason, he said didn't give a clear view of what the tumor consisted of. my actual dr. is 70+ yr old and recommended me to his colleague partner in the baptist women's hospital group.
thanks again,
in christian love,

/dermoid tumors, are almost 100% bengine, they are odd turmors often containing hair, teeth or other bone like material. I am not aware of any connection between these cysts and your iron level. Your iron level is very high do you eat a lot of meat and dark green vegtables, if yes I would cut down. I have no idea if your levels would return to normal post . This would be an appropiate question to put in our expert dr, forum , or to ask your own doctor. I would advise you to do a ton of online resurch at your age there are many advantages to retaining ovaries.

by b./w in regard to tumors proximity to uterus do you mean , beside/below and within?  If thats the case then I would strongly urge you to get atleast one more opinion, to the very best of my knowledge dermoids are normal removed just the tumor itself.  Cherie
