Just wanted to give everyone an update. I finally have surgery scheduled for June 6th. I have been dealing with pain I mean constant pain. My stomach is all swollen from this cyst that on my ovary. It needs to come out. I look like i am  pregnant. So i did all my labs and pre adm stuff and I take my fleets stuff i guess it to make me poop all day and then an enema that night then off to the cutting yard friday. I have been terrified of having this surgery. IF anyone can share their stories of the day they had surgery and when they woke up I would love to hear it. I dont know what to expect so im really scared. I have had some good people on here helping me out that have been thru it so that really helped in my decision to do this. You guys did it so i guess i can do it too.....

thanks in advance

Sometimes the surgeon can nick your bladder in which case you may go home with a catheter for a short period. It is not something you need fear.

I will be three weeks post op on Tuesday.  I am getting stronger every day....some days I take a step back in the energy department, but I am recuperating nicely like Princess.  I wa afraid to be put to sleep because my B/P drops extremely low. I lived and I am so glad I had it done

Well that sounds a bit discourging....did you have surgery or are u going to have it? couldnt really tell by the post. I am sorry you had to wear a pee bag? I havent really heard anyone complain about anything like that so i wasnt really worried about that part of it. But thanks for letting me know it can happen. I sort of have no choice but to have my surgery so i will pray that i dont have any prolonged problems.....

I never had to wear a "pee bag" and all of my pain is gone. I am 3 weeks post op with no pain whatsoever. Did you already have the surgery or are going to have the surgery? The date you posted was 11/8/08 which would make it next November?

I had my pre-op yesterday for a complete abdominal hysterectomy on Wed. 2/27/08.  To my shock the anesthesiogist recommended a regional (epidural) instead of general.  He said that is the preference at his hospital.  He promises I will be calm and sedated, but responsive.  He also promises I will have no pain post-op due to the spinal.  So, all in all, I am happy to be going this way.  I'm a bit nervous to be awake, but thrilled that my pain will be managed right after surgery.  I know the pain will come as it wears off, but they can keep the epidural in for 24 hours, so that should help also.  Roshelle, I will post again after my surgery to let you know how I did.  Please everyone, keep me in your thoughts (and prayers).  thanks.

I guess it depends on the surgeon. Mine absolutely said no.

I had a partial hyst. done three weeks ago, my doctor prefers a spinal, he says you recover faster and with less pain. They have a Morphine spinal, you can ask to be (partial) awake or out.

Hi there

thanks so much for your insight. I just decided to bite the bullet and i called the gyn/onc doctor that will be doing the surgery they told me that i can have spinal with mild sedation for open hysterectomy. so that solves my dilemma...i am really just afraid of being put to sleep and out of it. I like to know whats going on ...maybe i watch too much tv lol like er and greys anatomy....but either way i am sure i will be ok....i just put it into gods hands and i will be fine....thanks so much for your replies

Now this question is right up my alley. I like you did not want to be put to sleep. I don't really no what I was afraid of, but I was. I think I probably put my surgery off longer then I should have for this reason. I had had to other surgeries prior to my hysterectomy and was awake for both of those. Well I did ask my surgeon if I could be awake and just have an epidural or spinal and he said absoulutly no way. Needless to say I did have the procedure and I was put to sleep and I had no problem what so ever. I think the fear of being put to sleep was much worse then actually having it done. If you need someone to talk to about it, feel free to pm me.

Most will not approve..........I don't know if you are put in a tilting position with abdominal or not......but they usually frown on that. To my knowledge that is............

wow thanks for the heads up. I have been reading alot on it since i sent you a message and it appears i do have a choice. So i will need to speak with the anesthesioligst to make sure my wishes are met or else they will go with the general. I heard they prefer it because they dont have to deal with all of the questions and anxiety of a person that is awake during the surgery....so thanks so much for the info...you are full of knowledge;-)

PM me is you wanna talk

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and I was telling her how much I wished I would have had the spinal instead. She reminded me that I was suppose to talk to the anesthesiologist when she came in my room just before the surgery - my friend said THAT'S when I should have said something to the anesthesiologist. Actually, I forgot I was suppose to ask about the spinal. I thought my gyn doctor (he was also the surgeon) was suppose to take care of this. I don't know how they do all this where you are, but I wanted to tell you make sure you tell the anesthesiologist too - hopefully he/she will see you before the surgery!

I will send you a PM later. I need to ask you something.

I will make someone knows what my wishes are. I told my husband to make sure no matter what they know cause he will have to deal with me when i wake up ;-)

I have an appointment with the specialist gyn/oncology to discuss the surgery and results of the CT Scan on feb 21st but my gyn already told me i had to have it done that the cyst on my ovary is too big so he wants to do complete hysterectomy....i am still reading on it and trying to get info i never thought i would have to go thru this. My mom had her taken out too she says its a breeze but i dont know....
i am still very nervous....

I will know more after my appointment they are supposed to get me done rather quickly i was told...

i will keep you posted....

You are very welcome :-)

Just make sure you let him know that is what you want. I didn't push the issue enough so that's why they went ahead and put me under. Either that or the nurse didn't make note of me wanting a spinal. I hate being put under!

I'm thinking if they can do a spinal while having a c-section then they can do a spinal for a hysterectomy. Mine was a vaginal (LAVH/BSO).

When is your surgery?
