My mom and I both have same symptoms, rash, tongue sores

Hi,

I am in my late 30s... I developed a facial rash Monday morning, it looks like I'm permanently flushed, it's on the cheeks, chin, forehead. Tuesday  morning I woke up with multiple tongue sores on both sides of my tongue. Rash on face has stayed. I do not have a fever or any other symptom.

Here's the weird thing... my mom developed a facial rash as well later Monday and she also has tongues sores that developed a day later, too.

We both have a facial rash (smooth, looks like we are flushed) and tongue sores. Wouldn't this have to be infectious in nature? I was thinking Fifth's disease but of course I am not a doctor.

Any ideas of what this could be?

Thanks.

Yes it could be the Mexican food. Maybe you can talk to them again and see if the cook used  a new spice and get the name of it. I think you are both allergic to it. Yes the dermatologists (certain ones) do patch testing. I need to get it done too because I was using a topical steroid and then I switched to another one and it took a few days (delayed hypersensitivity) and my legs blew up like elephant legs. It was terrible. So red /purple and itchy. They had to give me yet another class of steroids to get it down Then they peeled. Now two years later I still have some discoloration. I am supposed to go to a specialist for patch testing. If you can get into a dermatologist while you still have the rash and mouth sores then do or if not take photos with you. That is what I did. The first doctor thought I had a problem with my circulation because the legs were so swollen and he wouldn't listen to the fact that I used a new topical steroid. So, get a doctor who listens. I know hard to do. If you can't get into a doctor take the photos and then take Benedryl. You can use calamine lotion if it is itchy. If it isn't itchy I would leave it alone and it will go away. DO NOT put steroid topical on your face unless directed by a doctor. The face absorbs a lot more than other skin. and you have to taper off.

Yes, that's the interesting part to it... last Friday we both had Mexican take out. I mentioned that it seemed super spicy and we get take out there a lot. It was so spicy my lips, mouth, and chest felt like they were burning. I have had this dish before and it's never been spicy. We even called and the worker there said maybe the cook just put some extra spice in it. I had a certain dish, my mom had something else. The lip redness/dryness started with me on Sunday. By Monday morning, I developed tongue sores and the facial rash. My mom developed tongue sores and facial rash Monday too.

Could it somehow have been the Mexican? I am not sure!

Neither of us have more symptoms today, just facial flushing/rash and tongue sores. No fever, nothing else.

I really don't know where to turn. I emailed my doctor and she wasn't much help. I wonder if patch testing could identify something?

Thanks for your help!

Unless you both have a food allergy to the same thing. That would be weird too. But it does run in families. Or allergen that you got on your face  and tongue. Something to think about.

could be a weird hand foot and mouth virus. But you usually get other symptoms.

Hi. I just asked me my mom and she's had the chicken pox and apparently as a child I had a few marks when my sister had it which the doctor said was good since I got it but not bad.

You would think it's a virus. I will let you know.

I do know that this all started when I got redness around my lips, redness and dryness. Then a rash on the face. So weird.

Have you both had chicken pox? Yes you can get it as an adult. My husband got it at 40. Measles is another one but less likely. I think it is some time of virus. If you get any other symptom let me know.

Hi,

No we don't have any other symptoms which is odd. We just have facial rash, kind of looks like blushing, and a few tongue sores.

No fever, no coughing, aches or pains.

It's really weird.

Also, adults don't get the rash that children get with fifth's disease or "slap cheek". Do you have any other symptoms such as flu like symptoms?
thanks,

Any fever or sore throat? It does sound contagious. Or, possibly transmitted by a vector such as a insect.  Have you travelled anywhere?
