Herbal Medicine and Factor V Deficiency

I am an acupuncturist/herbalist/nurse and I have a patient with Factor V who wants help regulating hormone fluctuation causing severe PMS. She is not a candidate for OCP's and has sought out my help to approach this herbally. I see that you are also an acupuncturist/hebalist and was wondering if there are any concerns in prescribing herbs for this type of patient? Her PMS is definately liver stagnation w/heat. Are blood moving herbs a concern?

You have a very good question. I would have to do a more extensive study on the particular herbs that you are going to presribe. I would think in general that any blood mobilizing herbs would be OK since they would decrease the likelihood of clotting. However, if you give me a list of herbs that you are going to prescribe, I can do a literature search on possible contraindications for people with Factor V Leiden deficiency and get back to you.

The formula is by Evergreen Herbs called "Calm" it contains the following herbs:
Bai Shao
Bai Zhu
Bo He
Chai Hu
Dang Gui
Fu Ling
Mu Dan Pi
Sheng Jiang
Zhi Gan Cao
Zhi Zi

Bai Shao, Mu Dan Pi, **** Gui, Sheng Jiang--all have anticoagulant, antiplatelet and antithrombotic effects. Theoretically combining them with any anti-coagulant therapy may increase the risk of bleeding. So if they are on any western anticoagulants, I would suggest that they are contraindicated to take these herbs in combination.
