IBS...normal or not?

I recently was told by a gastroenterologist that I probably have IBS. He said it sounded like it from what symptoms i told him. The thing is I'm so paranoid that it could be a hernia instead, cause my lower right side is slightly swollen and real bloated and tight. I get more pain on the right. The back pain is so bad. None of the swelling or pain goes away. I've even tried Spasm medication, doesn't work. I'm taking Align probiotic. I'm trying to increase my fiber intake too. Nothing seems to work. I hear that with IBS the pain isnt constant, it goes away if you fix your diet and stuff. Mine is always there, and seems to be growing more painful. I'm due for another visit to the same doctor to see if i feel better by then, if not he wants to do a colonoscopy. My question is, does IBS cause severe pain in some people who have it, is what I'm describing normal?

ONE QUESTION MANY WHO HAVE IBS SHOULD ASK...AND FIND THE ANSWER TO.  " DOES ANYONE ELSE IN YOUR FIRST LEVEL FAMILY  HAVE IT,  DO THEY HAVE COLITIS, OR CROHNS,  LIKE A SISTER, BROTHER, FATHER.    HAVE YOU HAD WHAT YOU THOUGHT WAS SKIN ALLERGY OR  EXZEMA (eczema) ON THE FINGERS, ETC."    IF YOU CAN ANSWER THESE WITH A, YES.    READ UP ON " GLUTEN INTOLERANCE" OR " CELIAC DISEASE"   VERY GOOD CHANCE YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO " GLUTEN"   ITS GENETIC...CAN BE TREATED...JUST QUIT EATING ANYTHING WITH GLUTEN IN IT.    MY DAUGHTER WAS AND IS TREATED FOR   EXZEMA (eczema)...IBS...INDOCRINE SYSTEM DISEASE...HER FATHER HAS COLITIS, HER BROTHER (MY SON) HAS CROHNS.....SHE HAS IBS...  READ UP ON IT...." GLUTEN INTOLERANCE OR CELIAC......YOU'LL BE SHOCKED AT WHAT YOU SEE.   SEE IF YOU HAVE ALL THE SYMPTOMS...OR HALF.

MY DAUGHTER GETS REALLY SICK FROM IBS...ALMOST MAKES HER PASS OUT...BUT, SHE DOESNT HAVE SWELLING...COURSE...ITS PROBABLY BLOAT...SHE GETS THAT.   HER STOMACH HURTS BY HER BELLY BUTTON...I DON'T THINK I'VE HEARD HER SAY   HER BACK DID.   BUT, YOU INTESTINES CAN MAKE YOUR BACK HURT...  NOTHING HELPS HER WITH THE PAIN   EXCEPT   DYCLAMINE (SP)  IT HELPS RELAX IT....  DO YOU HAVE  EXZEMA (eczema) OF THE SKIN TOO?   DO YOU HAVE WHAT YOU THOUGHT WAS COLD SORES IN YOUR MOUTH?
DOES ANY OF YOUR FAMILY (MOTHER, FATHER, BROTHER, SISTER,) HAVE THE ANY INTESTINE DISEASE?    IF THEY DO....READ UP ON GLUTEN INTOLERANCE.  OR CELIAC DISEASE...

Hmm that weird about the swelling thing, may want to request a ct scan. It could be something to do with your appendix?
