I to have IBS for 9 yrs now ive been on meds. 7 months ago i had had enough of all the pills i wanted my body to have a break from all those pills. Big mistake at first i never felt better. But being off them for 6 months really caught up to me. Im now back on them feel better but i would rather be on a holitic form of therapy but very very expensive for me i cannot afford. There are herbal remedies such as entric coated peppermint oil which has shown great change in IBS patients but you must see your doc first before taking anything. I noticed someone had mentioned Asyodophilus although it is great for intestional health longterm use can actually cause more damage than good. Just because its herbal does not mean its safe. My sister knew someone who had been taking it and wound up in emergency basically had poisoned herself she had such high levels of it in her system and only took it as prescribed once a day. they told her at the hospital that it should only be used very short term. Hope this helps you out.

I personally doen't believe probiotics, like Acydophilus can help in IBS. I've also haven't find any published proofs for that. In IBS, the problem usually isn't deficiency, but rather an overgrowth of bacteria.

About carbohidrates - they are short chain carbohydrates, like lactose, fructose, sorbitol and other polyols that can be problematic in IBS. Starch should be OK, but wheat may be problematic for some.

I quit using prozac (for IBS) and started using Acidolphilus. I was told by a doctor that the supplement could take 6 months to "heal" my intestinal area. The bottle says that it is a "friendly bacteria found naturally in the intestines. It promotes a favorable balance of intestinal bacteria & supports the healthy functioning of the intestinal system." It's worth a try!

Another thing that I have found that relieves the bowel movements/diarrhea is watching my consumption of carbs. Carbs have a negative impact on people with IBS and Crohn's. My mom has Crohn's and she watches her carbs.

As for gas, stay away from carbonated beverages (soda).

Hope this helps!

You can try low-fodmap diet - you exclude sugars and some other nutrients from the diet for some days - if it helps , you know that the food was the culprit. Then you can slowly introduce some nutrients (to some extent) back to see what you can tolerate.
