Cirrhosis detected.

Hello everyone, I'm writing this question with desperation and stress as I am clueless and anxious about my mother's health.

Before this routine test, my mother who is 46 years old has been getting treatment for her gastric and acidity problems through a gastrologist, she was diagnosed with H.Pylori and the doctor used to conduct several physical exams and also got LFT (Liver Function Test) done along with Complete Blood Count (CBC) which came normal, thankfully.

Recently, under a routine test my mother had a Ultrasound done and surprisingly, cirrhosis was detected. We quickly got Hepatitus B and C tests done along with another LFT but all came normal, again, thankfully. Now we have decided to conduct further tests such as CT scans, etc.

My mother has been using different chew-able tobacco products for 20 years and some of them aren't very clean.

My deseprate question is, what is the possible cause for the cirrhosis? And how serious this could be? Keeping in mind that her liver is functioning well and there are no signs or symptoms of liver diseases.

Thank you.

Hi, thank you so much for the response.

I must add that the kind of tobacco products she has been using are not just tobacco products, they are unverified, untested mixes of certain fluids along with betalnuts etc. I doubt they are toxic as well.

We are now conducting tests regarding different causes, including autoimmune testing.

I submitted her reports to the CT scan head today, they asked to have the reports before they can provide us the CT scan results, don't know why but I'll post the data as soon as I have it.

However, I can assure that ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, creatinine were under normal levels, I double checked the reports and got it checked by the gaestrologist as well. She also had taken a CBC 4 months ago which also came normal.

I can confidently add that her liver as per lab results is functioning very well, but that sudden ultrasound report has gotten us all worried to death.

Thank you very much, I look forward to your addition to this.

Seems her diagnosis is tenuous based on the facts they are focused on. Try not to worry to much. The US data is not very good at diagnosing cirrhosis. And imaging in general does a poor job of this. When in doubt, a liver biopsy is the way to go. Even the latest fibroscan technigues are suspect.

Please keep working with her doctors. It is unlikely that chewing tobacco could cause this.

Be sure that autoimmune testing is done, especially the AMA so that PBC can be ruled out.  AIH is also a possibility with the autoimmune testing will identify as well.

Do you have her LFT data: ALT, AST, ALP as well as bilirubin, creatinine, INR? Let's us know how she is doing liver-wise.

I would also like to add that Ultrasound report said the liver is echogenic in texture.

Thank you.
