High alt ultrasound normal

Hello!

So I ended up having a liver and gall bladder ultrasound, and everything came back normal. However my ALT has continued to climb, it's up to 147 now. What could be the cause? I have no symptoms of anything besides fatigue. Thank you.

Yes, your thyroid meds can affect your liver. You might want to discuss this with your endocrinologist or primary doctor, whomever  is responsible for your thyroid management.

Your ALT enzymes are produced from your hepatocytes, so the issue involves your liver somehow, not else where. But given the relatively low levels of elevation and the normal imaging, then your liver is very likely still in good shape. It takes a very long, chronic disease to push your liver into an advanced disease state. Let's hope your new doctor comes up with something soon for you. A biopsy might be an option.

Could synthroid (a thyroid med) cause elevated ALT? I started the medication around the same time as the high alt.

Your puzzle remains it seems, did your doctors offer any possibilities that they are considering? Also, have they tested your autoantibodies yet, given the ALT and fatigue then AI issues are a possibility. Clearly your ALT is elevated enough to indicate that there is something amiss.

Have your doctors mentioned a liver biopsy yet? When all else fails then they may have to consider doing this.

They did an ANA and that was negative. I'm supposed to see a GI specialist this week so we'll see what he says or wants to test. I'm just so confused and scared of what it could be! I'm healthy otherwise and don't drink or take any medications besides a multivitamin and thyroid meds. I don't have any autoimmune diseases in my family either! If the liver looks normal on an ultrasound, could there still be something wrong with it? Or then is it more likely a  problem somewhere else?
