Insomnia or day/night reversal is 'normal' with cirrhosis. Sleeping pills either prescribed or OTC are extremely dangerous and should be avoided.
You could try taking Melatonin, which is natural and is the chemical used to control the circadian cycle (the body's clock). You can buy it at any pharmacy in the vitamins section. It doesn't work for be, to be honest, but for some it does.
The best advice I can give is sleep when you feel the need. Don't try and fight it - it's not worth it.
I also have liver disease and I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but melatonin is also toxic for the liver. I too have insomnia and I took for about a year a suppliment by solaray that worked great until I found out that melatonin was toxic. I still take it on occasion when I weight liver vs need for sleep. A tea called 'nighty night' with a varity of herbs for sleep works somewhat and is safe to my knowledge. You can get it at most grocery chains in the tea and coffe area. It taste good as well I use two tea bags and it is important to let it steep with a cover over it to release the herbs. Best wishes to you and my you get a good night sleep!
