liver biopsy is next?

have had a slow increase  in my numbers on my  ALT and AST blood tests now for a while. I had a ultrasound 2 years ago which indicated that I had (a fatty tissue) they think,  but were not sure and they were going to still keep a eye on the numbers. Somehow this was over looked.  With my AST at 60 and my  ALT at 131, are these numbers that high? If these numbers are not that high, then what would be a good reason for the increase in the 1st place. I am not a big drinker, a glass of wine once in a while is not a drinker. I am over 55 female, size 12, so I am not major over weight and I don't smoke. I eat right mostly at home because I love to cook good food. Now the doctor wants to do a  liver biopsy to see why and what is next. My question is, why would the number rise on their own over time? and if it turns out to be a fatty liver thing, what does that mean? Or could it be something no one is telling me about? It has been over 2 years from the ultrasound. So I am a little uneasy.

Your welcome.

I am so sorry to hear that your mother got Hep B from them reusing implements!  What a world, sickening.

You said "they say I don't have Hep A,B or C, but that you really wonder....I am a little confused,,,,,are they just assuming you don't have it without testing?  I know that sounds like a stupid question, but my doc at the time 'assumed' I didn't have hepc and I had to insist on the test - so just incase they didn't test,,make sure you insist...

I hope your mother is feeling okay. I honestly don't know what the treatment is for Hep B. But as far as HepC most of us here at MH know quite a bit from the extensive research we all have done and the sharing of our personal experiences.

Keep me posted as to what you find out. I hope to hear good news!

Take care,
MO

BTW I had a biopsy too and it was so easy. Very quick and didn't feel hardly anything. Its nothing like what you would expect. I would rather have a biopsy than a tooth filled.

One more thing, you may want to get another opinion before you even get the biopsy. Anything concerning "liver" you are much better off seeing a "hepatologist." They can be found at the larger teaching hospitals. As a matter of fact in the Hep C expert forum, DR. Dieterich is a Hepatologist at Mt Sinai in NYC. You may want to ask him a question or 2 and maybe even discuss your mothers case. He is very easy to talk to and is know thoroughout the world.

Thank you for the thought, I did in fact bring it up to my doctor. My 80 year old mother got Hep B in Las Vegas 2 weeks ago where they were caught reusing implements meant for one on others as well , done 2 years ago. Over 40,000 people have just now found out they have been infected since 2004. They say I don't have HEP A, B or C. But I really wonder..ya know? Worried some because, it is the unknown that I fear the most. Doc says I have to have the Biopsy. I just don't know what all this means and  sometimes I feel they know more then what they want you to know.Thank you for caring.

Because you have an increase in enzymes, I would ask the doctor to do a liver panel to check for Hep A. B and C....You may not have this, but you would want to rule this out. I have hep C and my enzymes were raised which is the reason why I asked for the test.

Many doctors for some reason don't think to test someone for hepatitus when the enzymes are elevated because some doctors still seem to think that only IV drug uses get hepatitus and thats not true. It is an epidemic. I just read an article on the internet - I'll look for it later and it claims 1 out of 24 New Yorkers they estimate have hepatitus C.

Going to the salon for a manicure is a risk if the implements are not steralized properly, so doctors tend to overlook risk factors like this.....but as I said - you may not have hep - there are many reasons for elevated enzymes - even certain meds can do it.

But if you do - God forbid have hep c, there is treatment for it. I am on it now.

Take care
