I had the same circumstance happen at my parents' house. I sort of "adopted" a stray, but at the time wasn't allowed to bring it in.  I feel bad about it in retrospect, but what can I do?

It was a black and white domestic short hair with a little white triangle around its jowls and nose area and white toes.  In one eye it had a cataract.
When I first saw the cat it was VERY shy. It would not allow me near it.  But after time progressed and patience, it came to follow me around and be very affectionate until it disappeared and I never saw it again.

What I did:  Start off by leaving some cat food in an area and then leave.  Eventually I left some cat food out and sat some place out of view.  I gradually moved closer over a period of weeks.  (This was out in the dead of winter btw....)  Eventually I was close enough to touch the cat.  I refrained for a few days.  One day decided to reach out and touch it. The cat flinched and left the area.   Next day or time, I did it again.  The cat tolerated it a little better.

Eventually it came to like me. I would have taken it into the house and adopted it, but my parents refused.  We tried to feed and care for it outside anyway.

-----------

The same sort of situation happened again with a white cat, but our next door neighbor ended up adopting him and neutering him.  He lived a pretty good life even though he turned out later to be FIV+.

Sahib (my grandma’s cat) is a stray she adopted. It just came right in after being chased by another cat.

thanks Heres what I have done , I first went to my neighbors to make sure I wouldnt get accused of cat-napping, they said they had seen the cat but didnt know who it had belonged to, I then went to Petsmart, nearly got a couple of Dogs but didnt ...just.. they gave me the phone no of the local animal shelter , i asked if it was a No kill shelter , they said it was if the cat had to be put down, but if I gave my number I would be called with a chance to take the cat myself, I would,  This is the most beautiful looking cat, friendly and so pretty, playful, slept on my knee at the PC this morning and tried to type to the Guys on the Abuse Forum in case they needed some cat help with all the problems there!! sorry I am being naughty now,!!  Any way ,we British ex-Pats are so long winded ,have you ever noticed, ..I was given the phone no and have to call tomorrow and they will hopefully take the little thing..unless I change my mind and keep him or her,by the way how can you tell what they are???

Your options for the cat varies depending on where you live, but it starts with feeding the cat until it is friendly, then:

1. Animal control can capture it and take it to a shelter for adoption. If its a younger animal it can be adopted, but if its old, they tend to put them down. Some areas of the country have no kill shelters but the way cats can breed such a thing is a losing proposition.

2. You can capture the kitty, take it in and have it broken (or fixed, depending on your perspective), and let it go. It can live outside and won't make new kitties. Disadvantage -- kitties tend not to live as long outside and have all kinds of problems that a ture pet cat would not have.

3. You can try and find an owner first, then capture the kitty and give it to them. There are some problems with this as even the nicest people turn out to be bad owners. However, the probably that the cat will live is higher than if it goes to a shelter, and it will probably have a better quality life than living outside. You can also try and place the cat at a farm if you life near one. Farms like hunting cats if they keep animals. Farm cats have a hard life but they love their barnyard existence.
