Hepatocellular carcinoma

by LBC, Aug 25, 2006 12:00AM
My brother has been diag. with hepatocellular carcinoma.
Here is what the results were:  1.  Multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma involving both lobes of the liver.2.There is nodularity of the hepatic contour suggesting underlying cirrhosis.  Recanalization of the umbillical vein and esophageal callaterals suggest the presence of underlying portal hypertension.  There is no evidence however of splenomegaly.  3.  Gastrohepatic retroperitoneal and portal and portal adenopathy.  He is a patient at MD Anderson and they have offered for him to be in a clinical study #2004-0847.  For myself, I just wanted to know the survival rate of this type of cancer and is it worth going through the trial studies?  They said he was not a candidate for surgery and he does have advanced liver cancer.  Please advise.  Thank you

My brother also has hepatocellular carcinoma that is inoperable.  Doc told him that he had less than a year to live, probably will be more like months.  Of course, we don't know how many months so we are savoring the time we have left with him.

He just started on Nexavar, a low dose.  Hopefully this will slow the progression of the cancer and prolong his life for a couple or few additional months.  He will be tested in the next two weeks and we are hoping for some good news.  However, we are also bracing ourselves for anything.

He continues to lose weight everyday no matter how much he tries to eat.  Which, in itself, is not much.  He can tolerate little.

Good luck to your brother and your family.  I know now what it is like and find it so devastating.  God Bless.
