Perineal abcess

My fiance noticed a bump between his scrotum and anus less than a week ago. Since then, it has grown to approx 2 inches in length, and is very firm and warm to the touch, as well as red with visible pus seen under the skin. He has now started running a fever and generally feels ill. He is afraid to go to the doctor, and since I have a nursing background, wants me to try to drain it at home. Is it medically necessary to go to the doctor, or can this be  taken care of ouselves?
