Sharp shooting pains in side of head

by Kelli27, Mar 15, 2009 04:40PM
Hi,

About 24 hours ago, I suddenly had sharp shooting pains in the right side of my head.  Most of them last only a second, some up to 3 or 4 seconds.  Then nothing.  Then another batch.   I am 35 and have had migraines since about 18 years of age.  I am concerned that this could be an anuerysm.  I would not characterize it as the "worst headache of my life"..not even a headache really, as I am fine between stabs.  I don't know whether to go to the hospital or wait it out until Monday and try to find a physician to see me on short notice.

Any thoughts or advice from the doctors?  Thanks!
Kelli

Hi,

Your symptoms are characteristic of ice pick headaches. These are sharp shooting headaches which are frequently seen in patients with long standing history of migraines.
Indomethacin is usually prescribed to control these headaches.
If the attacks persist please consult your physician as you may need to take medication.
Good luck!
